Day 2 July 8th - New York's Mean Streets? Not So Mean Anymore

Watch the video above and answer the questions that follow.  Make sure your answers are unique and reflect your own point of view.  Points will be deducted for answers too similar to posts by other students.  Further,do not speak generally; make sure to use specific examples from the video.

1) Ms. Khan's mantra is, "do bold experiments that are cheap to try out".  How has this mantra changed the streets of NYC? Provide specific examples complete with statistics.

2) According to Ms. Khan how does the creation of public space lead to profit? Provide specific examples complete with statistics

3) Some argue that "The thing that irks me about her talk is that it is always inferred that the masses are so appreciative and happily adopting to all of the changes happening in NYC. But reality speaks a different truth as the millions of drivers in NYC are discriminating against by this City-Planning. And the myth that everyone is riding bikes to and from all the boroughs is only partially true in the warmer months and for those living close to NYC. The rest of the people living further out into the outskirts of NYC don't have access to any of this. -So stop calling it something for everyone. IT'S NOT." In light of what you saw in the video and your own personal experiences in NYC do you agree or disagree with this argument?  Give three reasons for your  answer.

4) Does this TED Talk contradict or corroborate last night's TED Talk by Majora Carter? Explain.

5) Ms. Khan talks about the many lessons that can be learned from the re-purposing and re-imagining of NYC streets.   How can you use this TED Talk to complete your final project.  Be specific.  We expect that details from all TED Talks will be incorporated into your final presentation.

  1. 1) people enjoyed the none permanent materials. They flocked to the space created at time square. 350,000 people move through there each day. So that many people if not maybe a little bit less got to experience the spot for the first time and lived it. If they didn't like it it was able to be removed cheaply as well as it was put it at a small cost.
2)when the team renovated unused roads stores in the vacinity of the walk ways made more money because more people walked through the modified area.
3)yes its something for everyone, however this person is correct some people don't have access to bikes nor do they have the stamina to ride from there house into the city and back, winter is a big variable of travel during the year in new York.
4)I think this plan corraborates ms.carters plan because she talks about making a healthy environment and take away most pollution in the area making it a little bit more healthy for the people walking or traveling in that area.
5)this ted talk helps because it helps me think about where space might be needed and where space might be wasted on my city design this ted talk definitely will help me plan the way my streets are planned.

  2. 1."do bold experiments that are cheap to try out" This philosophy worked in the construction of nyc streets by creating large walkways with benches chairs and green spaces in times square.350,000 people walk through times square a day it is very important to have safe walking spaces. with the construction of these new streets about 35% of pedestrians injury's will go down.
2.The creation of this public space will lead to profit because the UN predicts that in 40 years the population is going to double, this means we need more space for tourists and people to shop. Also these walking spaces will include for space for more buses which people will spend money on.
3.i disagree with the person making the statements about ms khan because just like any other space in different cities the space can be use full to anyone who takes advantage of their parks and green spaces, her ideas have no negative impact i agree with her because travel times will be improved 17% pedestrian injury rate will decrease and also with the population expanding we need more space.
    4. This women in today speech and last nights speech have similar goals but have different obstacles to overcome. ms carter has to over come crime, garbage dumps ect while ms khan is dealing with traffic issues.
    5. i can use this video to help with my final project because it showed me the economic value of having more space for people to shop and relax at the same time. The difference between last nights speech and tonight's was that ms khan was focusing on putting a green space when we have many other things like central park, bryant park. ms carter wasnt looking for any money and bronx doesn't have any green spaces. That tought me not to over crowd my city with green spaces.

  3. 1.This mantra has changed the streets of NYC by people removing permanent materials at a low cost. 2.Creation of public space lead to profits by putting more space and people wanting to come to your space and pay alot of money because thats space is attractive and nice.
3.Yes I agree with this argument because some people don't have access to a bike and bad weather conditions like winter would never let a person take chances riding a bike in and out of the snow. Some people have bikes because their use to riding bikes in warmer weather and its faster for them to get to where they need to go and comeback home safely. With low money some people cant even afford to buy a bike because of how much value is on it. 4.This plan corraborates Ms.Carters plan because she also wants to make the environment safer for many people to enjoy which impacts other people who she inspires to do like she does just by helping and making the world a better place to live in. 5.This ted talk helps because it gives me strategies to where i need to make adjustments such which space do i need and which space I don't need and this ted talk really helps me to think the way my buildings and streets are going to planned when i come up with great ideas to put them in the right places for people to explorer

  4. 1) ms.khan mantra change the NYC streets by they create more space in the city so more business to come to the city. They put chairs I the city so the people can sit and rest when they travel to the city.

2). Ms. Khane creation of public space lead to profit they made more space I the city because the population get bigger every year so they more space the tourist and people can live.

    3) yes I will agree with this person because because can't do that much things when bad weather is happen like you can't ride bikes or walk, or ride horses that's to keep the people safe when the weather is warm they can do those things.

4). The both are the same because they both want to make the city a better place for the people to stay ms cater want a better and healty environment and ms khans wants to make more space the city for the people.

5). The ted talks gives more information for my city because I want to have a health and big city with lots of space for the people to come to the city enjoy the parks and chairs.

  5. 1)This mantra is clearly saying trying/bringing in new innovative ideas to your city and see if that change has a positive or negative response. Its taking a chance that helps the city itself become new and entertaining ti the needs of the residents that live there, like the city bike system.
2)the more space the city has the more ideas can come into play to make the city money. for example the took that triangle crossway and connected it to the other sidewalk, the business there saw a increase of customer purchases due that that.
    3) i disagree with this argument. there may be more space for the people on the sidewalk and more space for people in general but what happens to the people who use transportation and its even more problems for them since all that space is going to people who might not even utilize it all the benefits of that space to the fullest.
    4) this ted talk goes with the other because they both talk about change of useless space. for example the parking lot it was created it into something to help the city look and just to be better it's self for the sake of the people over there.
5)i could use this ted talk to not only not have useless space but also if making space into something useful, just take of vantage of it to increase the amount of money the city intakes because of it. For examples the city bike system in NYC.

  6. 1- This mantra has changed NYC streets because like Ms.Khan said there was a lot of people sitting on fire hydrant cause there was no where else to sit and that's when they added larger walkways, benches chairs and green spaces at Times Square and that made streets more safe.
2- The creation of public spaces lead to profit because there more space for walking and sitting, a lot of people would love to go there cause it's attractive and a better view for the tourist.
3- I do agree with this argument because manny people don't live around NYC, and many people can't afford to rent or buy a bike. During the winter you can't travel in bike cause of the bad condition.
4- This plan corroborates to last nights video because they both are wanting to do something good for the environment. Ms. Carter's wants to decrease pollution and increase more health and great stuff for the environment and Ms. Khan is making the sidewalks bigger and adding bike lanes to the decrease accidents.
5- This Ted talk could help me create my city better and healthy. I could make my city by adding more lanes for bikes and I could add bigger sidewalks to make my city safe. Overall this video has helped me a lot to create my last project.

  7. 1Ms.khans mantra change of NYC by building New York public places and public streets in the center of the city of New York for people to ride bikes and sit down on chairs.
2.ms.khans mantra creation of public space lead to profit so that more people can have more space for them to live and work.if that happens more people we'll come and grow a big population making the erea earn credit to there biuld's.
3.i agree to the argument because she is telling people that there we'll be better thing in the erea of New York City.and she wants people to understand how things would be build and and it would look more neater.
4.i think that this Ted talk video is better because it has more information.
5.this Ted talk can help me with my city and the 2 movies we'll help me with my city project.

1 – The mantra ‘Do bold experiments that are cheap to try out’ has managed to change the streets of NYC by maximizing efficient mobility, making more room for bikes and people to use the space around them to enjoy themselves and the city, for an example 350,000 people walk through time square and quite frankly that can get tiring, so in response they put up a pedestrian rest area with seats and tables. Due to the change travel times improved up to 17% and pedestrian injuries went down 35%

2 – The creation of public space leads to profit because when an area is improved and is easily accessible people will be able to access stores easier. For an example in Dumbo Brooklyn after remaking a ‘dingy’ looking parking lot and making it more appealing to the eye the retail sales went up 172%. When people find areas attractive they naturally will flock there and want to use the available vaccinates.

3 – I have to agree with this argument, although making an area more appealing and nice to look at it does nothing if you keep taking up potential parking spots in the city and replacing them with spots for people to relax in, the city is crowded and parking is everything but plentiful this will only add to the problem. Another reason I agree with the argument is that it is true, not everyone rides bikes in the city, bike lanes have been added and that’s not a problem but I believe the amount of people riding bikes dwarfs in comparison to the people constantly coming and going from the city in cars, so you honestly can’t say those bikes are for ‘everyone’. In experience of what I see while in the city another reason why I agree with the quote is that the city already has many parks and attractions with sitting areas, and in addition to that many of the parks are being remodeled to be more trendy and attractive, besides that walking in the city is not your only option, one of many good things about New York is the wide variety of transportation! You can take a taxi or ride the bus, so it’s not like people are stuck in one place if they can’t walk any further.

4 – I think this TED talk corroborates with last night’s talk because Majora Carter was all for fixing up the areas in the neighborhood to make it look aesthetically pleasing, this TED takes the same approach in terms of making a place where people will feel more welcomed and comfortable, even in a busy area like Manhattan or in the case of last night’s talk, the South Bronx.

5 – I can use this TED talk to apply to my final project by using the aspect of thinking ahead. Instead of waiting for the people to come to me for their wants and needs, I do the thinking for them and make the best decisions for their safety and enjoyment. This TED talk also informs me of how to make small sacrifices for the greater good that I can apply to my city.

  9. 1 . THE CHANGES MADE NYC A BETTER STREET BY CREATING A BETTER PLACE FOR THEM

2 . THE PUBLIC HAD MADE MORE PEOPLE TO MAKE IDEALS TO MAKE THE CITY HAS MORE MONEY

3 . YES THE AGREEMENT IS THAT MANY PEOPLE DO NOT LIVE IN THIS GREAT CITY NYC . IT WOULD TAKE A GREAT CITY TO BUILD THIS NATION TO BE NEATER AND SAFER

4 . HONESTLY, COMPARE TO LAST NIGHT CLIP TALKED ABOUT GREAT THINGS MADE VALID POINTS ABOUT THE INFORMATION.

5 . EVERYTHING IS NEEDED FOR ME GIVING ME GREAT INFORMATIONS SO I COULD CREATE MY OWN GOOD, GREAT CITY BETTER THAN ALL THE CITIES

  10. Due to the 350,000 people daily travel, throughout Time Square, this mantra changed the streets of NYC by creating more parking or holding spaces for both bikes and NYC buses. Also because of such a largely populated area, 350,000 people to be exact. I can use this TED talk to complete my project because it gives an economic view point and value of creating more space for the people of NYC to enjoy and relax at the same time. Throughout both videos these women speak similarly about how places in NYC such as the South Bronx and Time Square Manhattan could be a better, more safer place and community to the people if we just add a variety of spaces for cars buses and bikes and even create more parks for children to play in . That creating theses things may lower such expectations of the many different cultures and maybe cultures such as African Americans and Latinos won't be looked upon as the "poor people" "the poor communities" and that we can be seen as equal to others of different social and economic class.

  11. 1. this mantra "do bold experiments that are cheap to try out" helped because it decreased pedestrian ingurees by 35% and improved travel time by 7%.
2.it leads to profit because it it leads to more space for the tourist to tour around and shop.
    3. i agree with the argument because some people that live far out in NYC may not have a bike to travel back and forth , or if they do there not going to be able to travel in the winter weather like snow.
    4. i think it corroborates because ms carter wanted a better environment for her community because of the garbage dumps that was polluting the air.
    5. these ted talks will help me because it will show me to have a better environment for my city and space for the people to travel and live in.

  12. 1. Ms. Khan mantra is "do bold experiments that are cheap to try out". The mantra is saying that you can make a big change using a small amount of money. This mantra has changed the streets of New York because there was a huge difference when the streets expanded by 2 and 1/2 acres for the better. In addition the amount of seats were increased and the streets looked better in a shorter time with less construction and was inexpensive.

    2. The creation of public space leads to profit because if the number of people increase in front of stores and businesses then the stores will be a lot busier. For example, there were areas in Bedstuy, Brooklyn that has been changed for the better, based on looks, traffic and for the benefit of the stores. These areas were changed from bad parking areas and old and dirty walkways to a healthier and greener looking environment.

    3. I disagree with this argument because the new sidewalks, bike routes and roads are beneficial for businesses with 72% of workers who approve and more comfortable for people who want to travel around times square rather than being cramped waiting in one spot for traffic to pass. Although bikes aren't as accessible during colder weather, it's healthier for society, instead of driving around everywhere you go and more thrilling. In addition, this is better for all kinds of transportation, because before the only thing Times Square was dependent on was the cars, buses and taxi's. Now bikes are safer to ride now than injuries are cut in half and more people are cycling and pedestrians are less cramped on the sidewalks and more comfortable.

    4. This TED talk corroborates with Ms. Carter's TED talk, because Ms. Carter discussed getting rid of the polluted areas in South Bronx and making the Bronx a better and greener area. Ms. Khan's TED talk discusses expanding the roads for less accidents and more people to increase the amount of transportation.

    5. This TED talk can help me create a bigger and better city by showing me how to balance out the amount of transportation, instead of cramping areas together and creating more accidents. The transportation should all be equal and balanced out for a healthier instead of a lazier environment.

  13. The bold experiments that are cheap did help to change NYC because it made it easier for people to walk everyone was getting around with less problems or accidents occurring. The people adjusted to the temporary open space quickly with no one to even notify them.

Acoording to Ms.Khan being that there is more open space now the public does benefit and make a great deal of a new profits there was numerous amount of retail stores that has opened.

People may be discriminating from this new city plan because there isn't a way for them to benefit them and they just looking into cost and how much work and in convince it will bring upon the people around the neighborhood. i disagree with the argument i feel as they should try new change it is the twenty first century and change is what this era is all about.

Ms.Khan talk about the many lessons that can be learned from re purposing and re imagining the streets of New York City and there are list of lessons shown when trying to re purpose and make more room for the people or the car or what is needed because they see what works for the city and what doesn't work and future idea incase there idea being used doesn't work.

  14. 1.This mantra changed the streets of NYC by people removing permanent materials at a low cost.
    2. According to Ms. Khan the creation of public space lead to profit by letting other people into youyr space and let them pay for it aka rent.
    3. Yes I agree with this argument because some people can not afford a bike or live way to far.
    4. This TED Talk contradict or corroborate last night's TED Talk by Majora Carter because she is trying to get rid of the garbage and the dirty areas and create a clean environment.
    5. This ted talk helps because this tells me where I should put certain things such as garbage or make a clean environment and how
    to keep it clean.

  15. 1- this mantra has changed the streets of nyc because what was just a small street painted over began attracting a lot of people and the local stores began to make lonesome profit.
2-the creation of public space leads to profit because near by retail store will be serving all the people who are now spending time in their new open space that is reserved for them
3- I agree because citibike is only limtited to people in the nyc and and parts of the Brooklyn area. people outside these areas aren't included and this could become a potential problem further down the road. another reason is the fatality percentage has not decreased, its fairly still the same so even if traffic clears up a little accidents still happen a lot. nyc cab drivers can suffer heavy profit loss since everyone is now using bikes to get around they can be force to find jobs elsewhere.
4- this corroborates with last nights video because they both has the city's well being in mind and has made somewhat successful attempts in re-urbanizing the city
5- I can use this video to help me with my design by taking important remarks made in her speech such as "do bold experiments that are cheap to try out". now I know that it dosen't just take money to create a city the population would like but you have to tinker around and try the small cheap stuffs so if it works the money I still have I can use to build on to my city and meet the expectation levels of my teachers

  16. 1- Mrs. Khan is bold because she had set plans that would work for the city and make it a better place, she tested it out to make sure it had a positive impact on the city so it wouldn't take a change for the worst
2- According to Mrs. khan they gained profit from this idea by rents being doubled and five new flagship store being opened
3- Some may say she changed for the worst but I disagree because of our city making money it could bring the city value up
4-They both have the same ideas but they are focused on different things
5- I can use this idea in my final project for a layout to plan my city for a main attraction place where all the money can be made in one spot

  18. 1.) Ms. Khan's mantra changed the streets of NYC by making a separate bus lane. This lane is only for buses, if any car comes in it with get a ticket, because there's a camera on the bus and takes a picture of your car in the bus lane. Ms. Khan has also created safe bike lanes. She has created many walkways for people to cross the streets safely.

2.) According to Ms.Khan, the creation of public space does lead to profit. It leads to profit because all the local stores rents have doubled, five new flagship store are opening up, and is a great place for people to sit down for.

3.) I agree with the topic that this city plan isn't working out so good for the millions of drivers. I say this because 1, it causes too much traffic. 2 it took up all the available parking spots. And 3, the taxi drivers aren't making money, because of these Citi bikes.

4.) Yes, this TED talk corroborates las night's TED talk by Majora Carter, because they both have the same idea. The idea is to work together and change the environment to a better place.

5.) This TED talk can help me with my final presentation by, making safer walkways, bike lanes, and bus lanes. I will know how to make profit in the city, by closing a street and making it a safe walkway and so that people can sit down.

  19. 1-The mantra has changed the streets of NYC is that people have been getting removal permanent materials for a low price.
2- Ms.Khan thinking toward of public space is to have more space people would interact more to the city , like that city would earn more get well profit and make the world well used and nice for the new comers.

    - Harwinder Singh
3-Yes the agreement is that many people don't live in NYC.It would be a wonderful successful goal to build the area to be well cleaned and more safer.
4- I think that the Ted talk and Ms.Carter both have spoke about the amount of space is used for no reason. They both want to space should be used for something better more helpful.
5- This Ted talk could help us to make our city better more cleaner , organized , more buildings and more structures.

    ReplyDelete
  20. 1- This mantra has made nyc streets safer. For example when they temporally closed down 42st to 47st and opened pedestrian space with temporary materials pedestrian injuries went down 35%, travel time improved to 17% and retail rents doubled.

2- According to Ms.Khan more pedestrian space helps lead to profit because the more the people are on the streets and around the stores the more likely they will go inside to shop. Since doing this retail sales have went up 172%

3- I agree with the argument because yes it is safer and better for pedestrians and bikers it makes it hard for cars. the more streets they close up the harder it may be for drivers in the colder months of the year. this also takes away potential parking spaces because the bikes lanes are there. So yes it is a good idea for New Yorker's who don't drive but what about the ones that do, no ones making it more convenient for them.

4- In my opinion todays ted talk corroborates with last nights ted talk by Majora Carter because it would be ideal for her stand on a greener world. For example, with all the opportunity for people to now walk or bike is giving them a way to stay fit and active. This also leads to less pollution and with store like Macy's taking care of the new open space theres less litter on the streets. Those things were part of Ms.Carters idea of a changed society.

5- This ted talk can help me develop my streets. It is important to build a city that is convenient for all residents there and to keep the environment there clean and safer. By using this video the businesses in my town will make a good profit, the people will be more active and the city will also be pretty

  21. 1.The mantra "do bold experiments that are cheap to try out" has changed the streets of NYC by providing saftey. In the video Ms. Khan's tells us how they created a protected bicycle lanes which floated parker spaces. It made NYC a safer place to ride a bike everywhere.
2.Ms.Khan says that the creation of public space lead to profit because it provides safety more people will show up to the cities. Now that they have these public space in time square it is one of the top ten retail locations on the planet.
3.I agree with this statement , people would say anything to convince other people to get there way especially if it's there job. Also because i live in Queens it would be very diffcult for me to travel to manhattan on a bike.Another reason is because people live so far it is more likely for them not to be safe because these type of bike places and public spaces are not everywhere they are most likely in manhattan. Not everyone has the same situation as the city people it is harder for us to travel all they way to a location on a bike.
4.The TED corroborates with last nights TED because the both wanted to build puncle spaces and create a better environment and sagety net for society.
    5. I can use this TED to complete my final project by taking into consideration that public spaces provide sloutions. Solutions in economic situations , and safety.

  22. 1- Ms. Khan's mantra is, "do bold experiments that are cheap to try out". has changed the streets of NYC significantly by not only lowering the travel time from point A to B by 7%. It also lowered the amount of injury's that occur in the city of new york by a staggering 35%.

2- According to Ms. Khan public space leads to profit do to the more easier accessibility that people have to a certain area such as Parks, and stores. Also the improvement of an area plays a role in the amount of income a certain part of the city makes. Such as times square in Manhattan New York, this is a major tourist attraction, if times square was a very dirty, ghetto place nobody would go there.

3- I Agree with this argument, because The city bikes can really only be used in the warm months (Riding a bike in the snow is not a good idea). Also the citi bikes are taking up much needed parking in the bust city, the only thing to fix this is bulid parking garages or remove the citi bikes from the street. Lastly, the extended sidewalks in the city is good for the ones walking but if your driving it just makes it harder to get around the city.

4- i Believe that this TED Talk corroborate last night's TED Talk by Majora Carter. i believe this because the both of them have the ideas that would in term make the city a better place.

5- i can use this Ted talk in my final project by considering the negatives and the positives. a negative being increased traffic and less car accessibility in the city. But embracing the positives by spending a lil money to gain alot of money, and if that happenes it will make the city richer which will allow our city to expand and slightly urbanize rural areas.

  23. 1. Mrs. Khan"do bold experiments that are cheap to try out" helped By making new york a better and safer place to live in.
    2. The creation of this public space will lead to profit by the rent being twice the amount and the flagship stop opened.
    3. i agree to the argument because she is telling people that there a lot of better thing in New York. and i like how she is determined on how she want to change the community
    4. Yeah both of the speakers have the same mindset. they want to change they're surrounding, environment.
    5. I can use this argument in my final project by not using a lot of money that the government provides to us. save it for when we actually need it.

  24. 1. This mantra has changed the streets of NYC by making it quicker and easier to update city streets. The city streets were not being used to their full potential before Ms.Khan's projects. These projects have made city streets safer, increased mobility, and increased the aesthetic appeal dramatically. "Do bold experiments that are cheap to try out" has been proven to be a great motto. The use of temporary materials to update city streets was a genius idea, because it is cost effective, can be done quickly, makes updating city streets easier, and as Ms.Kahn pointed out there is safety in making a drastic change when you are aware that things can be reverted back to their original state just as easily. For example, Ms.Kahn's six month pilot in Times Square was immediately successful. Ms.Kahn recognized that the problem with Times Square was that it was chaotic, unsafe, and had no where for pedestrians to sit. So, Ms.Kahn closed Broadway from 42nd street to 47th street to use temporary materials to create a space where pedestrians had a place to sit in Times Square. The first day of the sixth month pilot hundreds of people sat in lawn chairs in the middle of Times Square. Visitors suddenly had a place to sit down and relax while appreciating the beauty of Times Square. Since then pedestrian injuries are down 35%, travel times have improved by 17%, five new businesses opened, and the retail rent doubled in Times Square. I believe this is prove enough that Ms.Kahn's moto and methods have been effective.

    ReplyDelete
  25. 2. According to Ms.Kahn the creation of public space leads to profit, because more people on foot is better for business. One example is, how after pedestrian space was created in Times Square five new stores opened and the price of retail rent doubled. Another example is, how in Dumbo, Brooklyn a parking lot was updated with temporary materials and in three years retail sales have increased 172% percent!

    ReplyDelete
  26. 3. The argument about how the Citi Bike program and city planning has not benefitted everyone certainly makes a point. I agree with this argument. I am very aware that not everyone has loved and embraced the Citi bike project. Drivers in particular seem to be largely frustrated and unwilling to embrace this program. It is understandable. I have heard both of my parents complain about this program and it's effects. However, Ms.Kahn claims that 64% of people in NYC support the Citi Bike program. I am willing to believe it is doing more good than harm. I've also heard about the positive experiences people have had with Citi Bike program and I believe it's having a positive effect on the environment, since more people riding bikes instead of cars means less pollution. I agree that the city planning and Citi Bike program has not benefited people that do not live or often visit the city. I live in Queens and so far these projects haven't dramatically effected me. However, I think Queens could benefit from more pedestrian space and updated streets. I am simply glad that some residents and tourists are benefiting and embracing these new programs. I also agree that not everyone is cycling through all the boroughs and using the Citi Bike program. However, a good number of people are! I think every little bit counts. While I agree with the points made in the argument to some extent, I still believe he new city planning and Citi Bike program has had a positive effect, even if not everyone is pleased by it.

  27. 4. I think this TED talk corroborates with last night's TED talk with Majora Carter. Both women are looking for cost effective and efficient ways to improve New York. They both are attempting to use the space in New York in more effective and unique ways. Both women are looking to make a positive impact and make it a better, safer place to live for all residents. They just have extremely different professions and approaches to bettering New York.

  28. 5. I can use this TED talk in my final project by really attempting to use my street space fully and as effectively as possible. This TED talks has certainly given me plenty of ideas on how I can use street space. I could add space for pedestrians in particular in my final project. It's also made me think about whether or not I would like to put a emphasis on cycling as a transportation choice in my final project. I am still undecided, but this has inspired me and has forced me to come the realization that city street space is a underused resource that could benefit the City as a whole.

  29. 1- Ms. Khan's mantra "do bold experiments that are cheap to try out " changed the streets of NYC by the creation of more space so more businesses may pour in. Another Reason was they also designed the sidewalks into a sitting area to look more attractive.
2- The Creation of Public Space Lead to profit because there were more space for sitting and walking unlike it used to be where people would have been sitting on fire hidans and also caused less and safe traffic.
3- Yes I do agree with this argument that it's mostly for people in close ranges of the city and also would be bad because bike rental is only good for warm weather what would happen I when we go back to the winter.
4- This TED talk of the recreation of the streets of NYC corrobates with last nights one on the waste dumping in hoe south Bronx because such as he streets of time square was changed into a sitting and dining area the south Bronx dumping spot became a parking lot.
5- This TED talk gave me ideas to my final project by learning not to overcrowd street spaces and create trends that people would be attractive to and feel more entertained by.

  30. 1 The Mantra,"do bold experiments that are cheap to try out"changed the streets of NYC by in Manhattan, 42 St to 47 St is closed down to make it safer for people. 350,000 people move to 42 St each day according to Ms Khan, so it would be safer for people to walk and less traffic for the city.
2.The creation of this public space will lead to profit because the population in NYC keeps multiplying every year so more stores and more parks will boost NYC economy very well. For example, according to Ms. Khan, in 40 years NYC population will get bigger. So more stores will be great for NYC.
3.I disagree with this person making this statement about Ms Khans speech because NYC has been getting more greener than it was before. There are plenty of bike stations in manhattan and Brooklyn and that's a big improvement. Plus, I understand that they are a lot of drivers discriminating on city planning, but it seems like NYC is forcing people a little to not drive by closing 42 to 47 and having bike stations. Also, there are many big parks in NYC so I believe NYC is getting greener so there would be less driving in NYC.
    4. I believe Ms Carter from last TED talks, corroborate with Ms.Khan talk. I believe it corroborates because both want to make a place in NYC a better environment to live. While Ms Carter wants to improve the South Bronx, Ms Khan wants to improve NYC.
    5. Ican use this video to help with my final project because it shows what needs there are to make a better city, and how overtime this city can get better and better. Watching the video made me realize that there are big public spaces needed for people especially tourist. These factors can help me with my final project.

  31. 1. Ms khan's mantra changed the streets of NYC by lowering travel times 7% and it lowered injuries in NYC by 35%
    2. Public space leads to profit by more people being on the street the more people will spend their money in the stores around them
3.I agree because it takes up parking spots, taxi drivers aren't making that much money, and it causes a lot of traffic
4.This plans corroborates last night ted talk because they both want to help the environment, by things like making bigger sidewalks and decreasing pollution
    5. I can use this ted talk in my project by thinking about the space around my city, making sure I don't make the same mistakes that already been made which will help the way I plan my streets

  32. 1) Bike lanes have been made , Benches, and green spaces have been placed to make the streets more safer.

    2) According to Ms.Khan profits have doubled and made more money. Now that the space is clean and connected to the stores it is mlre enjoyable for the people and a lot more safer.

    3) No I do not agree due to the fact that the space is being unused and going to waste when there are thousands of bikers that bike in warm weather. There is more than enough space for people to walk and not get hit by a bike and enough space for cars to pass through to get to where there going.the number of injures have not rose.It has gone down by 50 per cent The number of cyclist and the number of Bike lanes rose rapidly.Although some may argue that this qoute is agreeable because the lanes are not used in winter.

4)This talk corroborates with the Ted Talk by Majora Carter. They both afe doing good for the enviroment.

    5) I could use this Ted Talk by helping think of ideas of what to do with extra space. To use it as green space but not all of it is green space. I could add bike lanes and connect the streets to the storesto get more business. This will definitely help me with the final project.

  33. 1 - this mantra changed the streets because it kept alot of people safe and it kept bikers/cyclists more aware of traffic and people walking on the street. The injury rate decreased.

2 - the creation of public space lead to more greenhouse activity. Like for example , bedstuy had a cramped little part of a street , but it was made into a hangout/bike spot for bikers to go by and for people to chill out in that spot.

3 - i would say that i agree with this because it would be better if there are bike lanes but too much bikes in one spot takes up too much space. Maybe if they would create another spot for bikes to be put in then yeah. Also cause it would be better for the people for the fact that there are less injuries occurring.

4 - i would say that this TED talk corroborate with last nights TED talk because both made an effort to make places that dont look good to make them look better than what they did before.

5 - i can use this TED talk to complete my final project by using some ideas that was used in this TED talk. For example , cutting off some areas to put in a people hangout. Also adding bike lanes for less injuries.

  34. 1- Ms. Khan's mantra has changed the streets in NYC by creating more space in the city for bikes, adding public chairs, making bus lanes, creating walkways and keeping the city safe to make it a better place.
2- The creation of public space led to profit because there is a lot of more space for the people to walk and more space for the tourists and buses in which the people will want to spend their money in a modernized city.
3- I agree with this argument because people who live in NYC can't really ride their bikes in cold weather as they do in the hot weather and some people are not able to afford a bike either.
4- This TED Talk corroborates last night's ted talk by Majora Carter because she plans on making the environment healthier and safer in the South Bronx by getting rid of the pollution and remodeling the neighborhood into a better place.
5- I can use this TED Talk to complete my final project because I can plan ahead and see how much space is going to be needed, how to keep the environment cleaner and build or add more to my city such as bike lanes, walkways or bus lanes too.

  35. 1) Mrs Khans experiment to change the streets of NYC is to make the cities more spaces and more room for new businesses and also they made they made the sidewalks so people could have more areas to sit and relax

    2) The Public space has progressed because they made the streets more wider and more spaces for people to have benches because before they didn't really have so much room to sit

    3) I agree because the city bikes takes up a lot of parking space 2) bikes are only made for the summer in spring in the winter there no use for bikes 3) and it also slows down traffic

    4) Both of the ted talks are similar because Mrs Carter wants to fix up the South Bronx and Mrs Khan's want to fix up the city they both have similar ideas to fix up NYC they both want to make a healthy City

    5) The Ted talk tonight that we have talks about the streets of New York like the overcrowd areas in the side walks smaller if i was to build my own city i would no what to do and how to make my city right

  37. 1. Ms. Khan's mantra's changed NY's streets by making it safer, cleaner, and at a low cost. An example is the creation of walkways and beaches for people because more than 350,000 move around in time square. These new creations make it easier for people to be safe and move around.
    2. The creation of public space lead to profit because in a few years the population is going to double, meaning that we need more space for tourists and people to shop and making the new walk ways modifying the area for people walk through it and shop.
    3. I disagree because Ms. Khan ideas don’t have a negative impact on the people she took advantage of the spaces not being used and created parks and green spaces because of this injuries have decreased 17%.
    4. The TED Talk corroborate last night's TED Talk by Majora Carter talks about making New York a healthier environment reducing the pollution in the area by creating new areas allowing people to walking and travel easily.
    5. TED Talk can help to complete your final project by providing ideas onto how to create a safe, clean, and healthier community. We have to think about how it will affect the people and environment.

  38. 1) Ms.Khans's mantra bettered the streets of New York by improvising and using our sidewalks for a good and safe cause such as benches and bike lanes .

    2) Public space can result to a profit because more space equals more businesses more businesses means more money and more people that would be attracted.

    3) I agree with this argument because bikes can only be used seasonally . its rare that you'll see someone riding a bike in december. Bikes can cause massive traffic possibly leading to accidents .

    4) Tonights and lastnight TED talk corroborates because botch show people dedicated to finding simple ways to better thier enviorments.

    5) I can use this TED talk to help me with my project because it gives ideas of things to add for empty space on my project.

  39. 1 - The mantra made improvements on the streets of NYC in a vast amount of ways. The streets of NYC changed in numerous ways such as ; More room for buses, bikes, & more room for people to enjoy the city & for it to be safe. 2 acres of public space was made on times square. The results of this were as followed, 17% quicker travel time, 35% less injuries along with 5 new retail stores opening up.
2 Public spaces in front of macys led to more business because they would be more active and outside. Along with grand ave and dumbo in Brooklyn. In Brooklyn, the retail sales increased 172% Percent. The painting had a big success
3- I agree with this statement because majority of New York weather is a Cold frontier opposed to living in California, or Florida where it is always a sunny weather & not so cold. However majority of the 12 months, ( 7 months being cold weather) bike lanes shouldn't be overpowering cars due to the fact majority of Manhattan are foreigners. even though injuries went down 50%.
3- Tonights ted talk and last nights ted talk are similar is because both speakers are trying to find a better way to help their environments.
    5) I can use this TED talk to help my project because the ideas can correspond to help my economy for my town/city

    1. the mantra changed the streets of New York by adding more room for buses, more room for people to enjoy the city and more room for new innovations. this will cut annual traffic fatalities by 50% by 2030, create programs to treat streets as public space, double bicycle commuting, and allow an implement of rapid bus lines.
    2. the creation of public space leads to profit because before people were sitting on fire hydrants and were overcrowding. they decided to make public space in 42nd street. traffic moved better, time square is now one of the top 10 retail areas in the world, so this will definitely boost up the profit in NYC.
    3. i personally disagree with this argument because although the bike lanes aren't present in my community, i know that if i take a trip to Manhattan i will be presented with them. not all of NYC is the same. Manhattan is an island and its streets are fairly larger than a street you'd find in Long Island or Queens. i do agree that not all of the masses arent enjoying the new changes only because not all of the new changes are for everyone. some people are comfortable staying in their area while others love being in the city atmosphere.
    4. this TED talk corroborates with last nights TED talk because the two talks speak of change and revamping certain areas. they differ only because South Bronx is notoriously known for being violent, dirty and poor; while in this TED talk were trying to improve our 42nd streets, and make more room for people to enjoy the city aspect more. they both are trying to get to the same place and that is to rebuild parts of nyc to make them more attractive.
    5. i can use this TED talk in my project because i love when she spoke about the public spaces. i never really thought about that and being that ive grown up in nyc, ive sat on hydrants before or the project border things that i pretended were swings, and now their are benches and little resting areas in which you can sit. even at the local bus stops, before you just stood their and waited for a bus. now their are seats available and shade so that your not in the sun and you can rest.

  41. 1.) Ms. Khan's mantra has changed the streets of NYC by placing cheap lawn chairs in Time Square. The response was people liked the lawn chairs. In Dumbo/ Bedstuy Brooklyn, paint and planters were used to change and create new pedestrian space.
2.) The creation of public space lead to the increase in retail sales by 49%, 15 new flag ship stores were open, retail rents doubled and pedestrian injuries were decreased to 17%. There were fewer retail vacancies(47%) as seen in Dumbo and Bedstuy Brooklyn.
3.) I agree with the quote because I live in Queens and I don't have access to the city bikes. Bike riding is for nice weather. This program is definitely not for people that live outside of Manhattan.
4.) Last night's TED talk by Marja Carter and ms. Khan's TED talk corroborate because they both focus on re purposing space. For example, Marja Carter cleaned up what was a dirty area, full of garbage and pollution, and turned it into a clean park. Ms. Khan took an unnecessary parking lot and turned it into a nice place for people to sit and relax.
5.) I can use this TED talk to complete my final project because it shows hoe valuable a city's space is. More space can increase city profit and keep citizens happy. ("Re purposing")

  42. 1. Ms. Khan's mantra changed the streets of NYC because it made the streets safer and more pedestrian friendly. Injuries went down by 35%. Also, travel time increased 17%.
    2. According to Ms. Khan, the creation of public space lead to profit because people had more space to shop at store fronts and other businesses. Times square is now one of the biggest commercial areas.
    3. I agree with this argument. For one, bikes cant be used all year long. During the winter time, another mode of transportation is necessary. Another reason is everyone in New York doesn't have a bike. A last reason is creating bikes lanes will decrease car lanes and more people have cars, causing traffic and confusion.
    4. The TED talk corroborates with last night's TED talk by Majora Carter because their both trying to better different aspects of their community
    5. This TED talk can be used to complete my final project because it shows me what to include and what to avoid in my city. Some things I can include would be a variety of transportation systems. Something I can avoid is a huge space of emptiness not being put to good use.

    ReplyDelete
  43. 1. Ms. Khan’s mantra “do bold experiments that are cheap to try out” has changed the streets of NYC by giving bikes as an option to travel on the streets. NY has become one of the cycling capitals in the U.S.A before it was considered scary riding a bike on the streets. New designs such as the first parking protected bike lane in the United States protected bikers by parking lanes injuries went down 50%. The number of cyclists in NYC took a boost because of more opening bike lanes from 800-1,000 cyclists in 2007 to 18,000 to 20,00 in 2011, while injures slightly went down.

    2. The creation of public space lead to profit by making it easier to get to a store. It said that more people on foot are better for business. For example in Bed Stuy, Brooklyn they painted over the street and connected the triangle to the storefront of Grand Avenue, which made business there, goes up. 72% of New Yorkers.

    3. I disagree with this argument because the new sidewalks, bike routes and roads are beneficial for businesses with 72% of workers who approve and more comfortable for people who want to travel around Times Square instead of being cramped waiting in one spot for traffic to pass. I think it would have society to become more physically fit. I also believe this is better for all kinds of transportation, because before the only thing Times Square was dependending on was the cars, buses and taxis this gave off a lot of traffic whenever I was in the city. I think bikes are safer to ride now that injuries went down 50% and this attracts people to ride bikes and not use cars which can prevent traffic from occurring.

    4. I think this corroborates last nights ted talk by Majora Carter because Ms. Carter talked about taking out waste areas that polluted the South Bronx and making it’s environment healthier. On the other hand we have tonight’s Ted talk by Ms. Khan who talked about having an option for bikes to travel around NYC who didn’t really focus on the environment, but focused on the streets of NYC.

    5. I can use this Ted Talk for my final project by using some methods Ms. Khan used. For example when she connected that triangle to the storefront in Bed Stuy Brooklyn this increased business in stores making it more easy to be used.

    1. Mantra is a word or sound repeated to aid concentration in meditation. "Do bold experiments that are cheap to try out." Ms. Khan's mantra goes into action in NYC in so many ways influencing more experiments because of the positive feedback. The fuel that feeds the fire of success is knowing the needs of NYC residents and working off that. Focusing on streets Ms. Khan goal was to " maximize mobility" and the ways she went across doing this was creating more room for buses, bikes, and especially increase the room that pedestrians have to enjoy the city while making it a safe area. 350,000 people a day walk through Times Square. Taking this issue into their own hands Ms. Khan and others did a "six month pilot" on Broadway, creating 2.5 acres of new pedestrian space. These bold experiments are cheap and temporary but mainly successful. This one experiment alone decreased pedestrian injuries by 35%. Travel time improved up to 17% , five new flag ship stores opened and Times Square is now one of the Top 10 retail locations. Not only working in Times Square but Grand Avenue and Brooklyn also. Using materials such as paint and planters, transforming 172% in 3 years. Because of the temporary material used, it was easy to remove unsuccessful experiments and if they were successful all that would be needed to do is to make the changes permanent. As a result of the built public spaces, 72% of New Yorkers approve of the new pedestrian plazas.

    2. According to Ms.Khan the creation of public space leads to profit because the more people on foot would lea to more business. Some examples would be after increasing the pedestrian space 5 new stores opened and retail rents double.

    3. I would have to agree with this argument. Yes, it I safer and better for pedestrians but it is mainly for people who live in that area. People outside of this area can't really benefit from this for reasons like them living too far to bike especially when it gets cold travel gets harder. Making more space for bikes and pedestrian walk ways is good but this idea wasn't created by a person who thinks ahead. The idea was made in preference of warmer seasons. Not keeping in mind how difficult it could be for cars to travel. The more streets closed off for chairs and tables the less option a car has to get around. This "all in pedestrian favor" idea can limit parking areas which can lead to more tickets and or backups. Being all in favor of just the people who don't drive and forgetting the ones that do can cause future issues. "Stop calling it something for everyone, ITS NOT."

    4. This TED talk collaborates with last nights TED talk by Majora Carter. Both giving insight to issues and creating a greener community. Less cars, less gas, less pollution. Another way they correspond in ways of making a greener area is because more people are on the streets hanging out it's less likely to leave garbage around. Self cleaning in these areas are less of an issue and neither is a green environment.

    5. This TED talk helps to complete my project by reminding me to think ahead, something Ms. Khan didn't do in her project. Design with all the seasons in mind to avoid future issues. Lastly to balance out ways of transportation.

    1) This mantra changed the streets of NYC by making the streets of NYC safer for pedestrians to relax in public space, safer for people to ride their bikes in the street, and flowing traffic for vehices. Pedestrian injures went down 35% and travel times improved up to 17%.
    2) The creation of public space brings more people and the people provide more money. Five new flagship stores opened and retail rents doubled.
    3) I agree with this agrument because its not always easy to drive through the city; traffic is extremely heavy and slow. Because of this people have no where to park their cars. Also because of the heavy traffic your basically stuck driving for several hours.
    4) This TED talk corroborates last night's TED talk because just like Ms. Carter, Ms. Khan is all about improving things and reconstructing things for the people.
    5) I can use this TED talk for understanding of how to make the streets of a city safe and enjoyable.

  46. 1. Ms. Khan's mantra has significantly improved the lives of pedestrians in NYC. Her mantra made the streets a lot safer and cleaner than ever before. The creation of more walkways and bike lanes has made things easier for the life of pedestrians. . 2. Public space is a great place to build tourist attractions. Also, why not throw in some stores? It will surely increase retail sales. . 3. I agree! People who live outside our glorious city won't have the taste of our safe and super-clean bike lanes. Traffic is heavy in NY, and so is the weather. . 4. Both TED talks definitely go hand in hand. They both have plans on fixing our environment, but both in different perspective. . 5. I can now use my new profound knowledge to stray from other people's mistakes and make the correct decisions when designing my city.

  47. 1. " do bold experiments that are cheap to try out " did work . It helped the building of benches & walkways in the city area. They did this so about 35% of pedestrian injuries will go down because they have a safe place to walk. It also brought money. By putting these attractions people would want to come and see what New York has to offer.
    2. Mrs. Khane's creation of public space brought money and help a lot of people make profit , it gave a chance for people from other countries to visit the city without it being too overcrowded even though some people still believe its crowded.
    3. I agree with this argument. My reason being is because during the winter , people cannot get around on bikes , if everyone is riding a bike it can lead to chaos , some people may not know how to ride a bike. The weather is NOT suitable to ride a bike. The examples given , are things you can do in suitable weather.
    4. I think this TES talk relates to last night talk because both women are trying to make a change in a community or city. Last night it was a change for the South Bronx and Tonight was a change or Manhattan.
    5. This TED talk can help me with my final project because it gives me a better understanding of things i should put in my city . 48. 1. the '' do bold experiments that are cheap to try out'' has changed the mean streets by providing priority safety to new york bikers with their bike lanes. Now they can bike everywhere safely.
    2. profit came out of the public space because now that there is more safety more people will come to the city and that means more profit to retail stores, food markets etc.
    3. I agree with the statement because number one i don't have a bike and number two it would be very difficult for me to travel to the city on the bike since i live in queens. not everywhere has those bike lanes or is as safe as the city.
    4. The two TED talks that we have done the past two nights correspond because they both talk about make the public a better place and making it more safe.

  49. 1.Ms. Khans belief of ''do bold experiments that are cheap to try out'' means that you can make major changes using very little money. This mantra has changed the mean streets of New York by making it safer for bikers and pedestrians to travel in times square, while generating revenue from the people that are sitting and observing the city.
2.The creation of public space generated profit for the surrounding businesses. When pedestrians were sitting down, they observed the city and its surroundings and realized that these stores and businesses were literally in front of them. They would then walk into them, browse and end up buying products, creating revenue for the businesses.
    3. I agree with this claim because there's many people that are traveling to the city by car. By taking away from the road ways that were available to cars, you are creating more traffic else where in the city causing drivers to be frustrated and annoyed. In my own experience, I have never rode a bike to the city but I have used and enjoyed the times square seats. I think that closing some of the city is okay as long as there are methods to alleviate some of the traffic it creates.
4.This TED talk corroborates with Ms.Carter's TED talk because they both want to improve the city and make it a safer and greener environment.
    5. This TED talk will help me with my final project because it gives examples of how to sustain an enjoyable life in the city but what are the consequences of doing such things. It lays way for me to develop my own city and allows me to consider more options on building a city and what I should consider including

  50. 1. " do bold experiments that are cheap to try out" . this worked in city streets because they placed chairs and green spaces in various parts of manhattan, 35O,OOO people walk through times square streets everyday its only right to provide a place for people to sit and communicate.

    2. according to ms khan the creation of public space led to profit because tourists and the new york people will use the walking spaces and for people to shop.

    3. i agree with this quote because in bad weather bikers are not able to ride their bikes , but in the spring and summer bikers get around faster & buy going green its saves the buses and cars from using a lot of gas.

  51. 1. the mantra is saying that bringing in new innovative ideas to your city and seeing that change has a positive or negative response. it takes a chance that helps the city becoe new and mostly entertaining of the needs of the residents that lives there.
    2. the more space the city has the more money the city might make. for example triangle crossways that they took and connected it to the other sidewalk that led to a lot of customer purchases.
    3. I disagree with this argument because there may be more space for the people who walks on the sidewalks but the people using vehicles and transportation are going to have problems since all the space is going to fill with people walking.
    4. this TED talk corroborates with ms. carter's TED talk because ms carter discussed getting rid of the polluted areas in the south Bronx and making the Bronx a better place/ area. ms khan TED talk discusses expanding the roads for less accidents to happen and more people to increase the amount of transportation.
5.this TED talk will help me create a better city and it will also show me how to have a better environment for my city.

  52. 1) Khan's mantra "do bold experiments that are cheap to try" really changed how the streets of NYC are. Now there are bikes available to ride and lanes made only for bicyclist. Also, there are chairs and tables across NYC where people can sit or go on with there day.
    2) The creation of public space helped NYC make a lot of profit. It made space available for people to create new businesses and a place where tourists or residents can go to walk around and visit new stores.
    3) I agree with this argument because I feel if new sidewalks were built it would change the lives of citizens of this city. A lot of more people would have to walk around or at least use a bicycle. Soon people wouldn't want to drive because of traffic so they would have to use the old fashion way.
    4) This video is similar to Carter's TED talk because both have the view of how they want NYC to be. Carter was explaining how she wants to clean up the streets of the Bronx to make it a cleaner environment. While in this video Khan is explaining how he wants to make more people ride bikes and walk so the air could be less polluted.
    5) Every TED talk is important and gives a better outlook on how to build a city, but this one showed me how that a city doesn't always strive on big buildings and cars. We also need to include places for people to ride bikes, walk, and to sit down to eat or just talk.

  53. 1) Ms. Khan's mantra is, "do bold experiments that are cheap to try out". How has this mantra changed the streets of NYC? Provide specific examples complete with statistics. Mrs. Khan's mantra, "do bold experiments that are cheap to try out" has changed the streets of NYC by bringing two and a half acres of pedestrian space, this being a "not so expensive" trial. Things moved better as well as faster so they decided to leave it.

    2) According to Ms. Khan how does the creation of public space lead to profit? Provide specific examples complete with statistics.
The creation of public space lead to the profit, according to Mrs Khan, by making things more open, it also made things easier, thus, more people on foot was definitely better for business.

Personally, i would agree with Mrs Khan, however, the statement above, dealing with the fact that the more open space added to NYC and all of the new innovative ideas are not for everyone, i am going to have to disagree. I am sure the people who were contested against the bike lanes during the lawsuit. The whole bike riding myth is indeed a myth, simply because many people are quite lazy and will not ride a bike to get to point A to point B if the points are "far."
    4) Does this TED Talk contradict or corroborate last night's TED Talk by Majora Carter? Explain.
I believe that this TED talk corroborates with last night's TED talk given by Ms. Carter simply because of the fact that the two of them were talking about building/enhancing parks, that are closer to the middle of a city versus a small park that would be on the outskirts of the town.
    5) Ms. Khan talks about the many lessons that can be learned from the re-purposing and re-imagining of NYC streets. How can you use this TED Talk to complete your final project. Be specific. We expect that details from all TED Talks will be incorporated into your final presentation.
I can use this TED talk to help me complete my project because this TED talk enforces the philosophy of "don't just destroy, but build upon" and that is how things used to work before the twenty first century. Everyone is so quick to want to destroy something that may look or be considered broken, instead of trying to fix it, so this will help me with building my city by not being so quick to remove a building or forget an idea, but rather try and build upon it to enhance it and change it for the better.
