July 10 Day 4 - A New Vision For Detroit

Make sure you answer all parts of all questions specifically and thoughtfully

1. In the early history of Detroit, how did Detroit represent the American Dream for African-Americans who arrived during the First Migration?

2. What was the primary business of Detroit in its early days?

3. How was the Second Migration different from the First Migration?   What happened to the city of Detroit as a result?

4. Identify 3 ways that a depleted population results in the decline of a city?

5. What was the Third Migration? How did the Third Migration represent hope for Detroit?

6. Many Detroiters took control of vacant lots and began to build community gardens.  Why does Ms. Griffin argue planting a garden isn’t enough to revitalize a city?

7. When many people think of revitalizing a city the first instinct is to return the city to” the glory of what it was”.  How is the strategic plan of Detroit Future City different?  How is this plan for Detroit a lesson both in urban planning and in life?

8. How does the “live-make” neighborhood reflect the 3 imperatives Ms. Griffin argues are essential to making the Detroit Future City Plan work?

9. Ms. Griffin argues at the beginning of the talk that an urban planner cannot save a city.  After seeing the talk in it’s entirety, do you agree? Disagree? Explain using 3 reasons.

10. In which specific ways does this talk give you ideas for the final project?

  1. 1.African Americans moved from the south to the north for better job opportunities
2.the primary business in Detroit was the automobile industry
3.The second migration was different than the first migration becuase during second migration the population began to decrease leaving homes,
    4. The things that contributed to the depletion of a city is vacant property, illegal dumping as a result of vacant homes cost of electricity and water were rising
5.The third migration represented hope for Detroit when former models and new accendents of ontro panewers came to create new business and stores.
6.Ms griffen says that even though green spaces are needed vacant land should be used for property owners and more ways then just growing food such as places of recreation
7.The Detroit city plan is different because they want to create surface lakes and instead of making the city residential they will have buildings.
    9. I agree that an urban planner cannot save a city. he is one person it takes a group effort to plan a city that will suceede because you need to have one person focused on living one person focused on making things better this time around and last but not least you need to make a successfull neighborhood everyone will like to live in
    10. this talk didnt give me any ideas for the project,it told me what not to do,

  2. 1. african americans came for a better way of life and better job opportunities.
2.the primary business of detroit was the automobile industry.
    3. the second migration was different then the first migration because during the second migration people started leaving homes so the population decreased.
    4. 3 ways that a depleted population results in the decline of a city are cost of electricity. illigal dumping and the rising of water.
5.the third migration represented hope for detroid when other people came and created new stores and businesses.
    6. ms griffin argues that planting a garden insn't enough tp revitalize a city because planting plants doesnt mean that the city will get better it might mean that the people would have more agricultural items for the way they live in the city.
7.the detroit city plan is different beacsue they want to created more stuff for example: surface lakes and buildings.
    8. the livve-make neighborhood reflect the 3 imperatives ms.griffin argues are essential to making the detroit future city plan work because of the new things that people might built.
    9. i think that a urban planner can save a city because he/she could help the people built what might think thats important for their city. and also urban planers will also give them ideas of making a good community.
10.this T.E.D talk give me ideas for the final project by helping me understand the way people lived and it also tells me what kind of mistakes i could make in my final project.

  3. In the early history of Detroit people have left the South and moved to the North for better job opportunities.
The automobile industry was the primary business.
During the second migration the population started to decrease.
According to Ms.Griffen, vacant land should be used for property owners.
I agree an urban planner cannot save a city, at least not alone it takes a group that would agree on the same level as the one person.

  4. 1- African Americans moved to the north for a better opportunities
2- the primary business was the automobile
3- it defended the first migration because people started leaving there homes
4- the three reasons are cost of electricity. illegal dumping and the rising of water
5- the third migration was when they created new stores and businesses
6- she was saying that the land should be used for property use and not for gardening
7- they wanted agriculture instead of making it more residential
8- they think this because new things are going to be built
9- urban planning can save a city if it is done right. if it is done right you can improve you city like what they did in time square, you just need to test things to make sure that it works out and is helpful towards the city

  5. 1.African Americans moved to the south they was poor because they needed money so they went north for a better job.
    2.the primary busniss for industry.
3.the map way getting to smaller each of the year because of the buildings and populations.
4.the three ways was to build city buildings and cut down bad sight and creat more space.
5.it helps detroy because of busnisses and new jobs.
6.because the gardens are taking up the space people need.
7.it change the city because the city we'll be a different place, looking more popular.and it we'll make a better life for the city plan for new and good life's.
8.the live-make is to make more stable buildings and more Interesting buildings in the city.
9.i disagree because they can save the city by creating new things, invention things(new stuff) and makeing living more livable.
    10. This can help because the talks tell that the things they doing to the city can make get ideas to my plans to what im gunna do to my city project.

  6. 1)> african american found that the north had better job opportunities then the south did for a better way of life.
2)>detroit's primary business was in the car building industry and assembly.
3)>the second migration didnt bring people but made them leave the city.it soon started to leave their homes in the city.
4)>-the less people working the less money the city makes.
    -no one is buying anything.
-if people don't inhabit a city less people would wanna come since its empty.
5)>that new people came in and saw the vacant places in detroit for new business to start up.
6)>that just planting new things just don't make the city what it was or new but goes back to when they had agricultural lifestyles.
7)>they want to build new things so that more people would come back to the city to increase back its population to what it was before.
8)>that new innovative things would have to be built in order to restore the population back to the city.
9)>agree. -not only one person can change what takes multiple people to do.
-you cant make everyone happy if your ideas dont match the vision of the residents that want to live there
-why do you only need one planner, but more than that so more ideas could come forward and could collab to make the city in differents aspects.
10)>that make sure people won't abandon your city due to that the life for them has change for them from hard to easy.

  7. 1) the African american population found that there were better and more job opportunities that pay higher in the northern half of the city than the southern half.
    2) Detroit's main source of income was in the auto industry. Buying, selling, repairing and manufacturing cars was an everyday thing.
    3) the second migration of people was the financial downfall of Detroit. People moved away and even just packing and leaving the city.
    4) first, the entire population of the city is leaving because there is no money to be made. Second, if there is no people to work there is no income for the city. Third, all items are left on shelves and the economy is dying.
    5) the their migration was the light at the end of the tunnel. The people who came saw all the opportunity to make there own businesses out of vacant homes. When things are so cheap the people bought it up for very little money.
6)ms.Griffen says thaybthe gardens are taking up the space where business can expand.
7)ms.Griffen and her team want to build new home so that they may draw more people back to Detroit and bring the city back to life.
8)these new innovations must be the reason why Detroit survives in the long run. Without this Detroit will fail.
9)I agree with ms.Griffen. one person can't stand alone to fix this city. People need to come together and help support their city in order for it to survive. A house that is divided will not stand. They need to all come together.
    10) I need ti make sure that I can not only think about the benefits of the city but of my people as well. If I abandon the interests of my citizens they will abandon what I gave to them.

  8. 1. Detroit represented the American Dream because the North became more urban due to Urbanization and Industrialization. This created better job opportunities for the African Americans in than the rural south.

    2. Detroit's primary business in it's early days were automobile industries.

    3. The second migration of Detroit was different from the first migration because instead of the population increasing, people migrated away from the city, thus depleting the population by 25% from 2000-2010.

    4. The depleting population resulted in 100,000 abandoned homes, an increase in property taxes because people left there homes.

    5. The third migration was when cultural entrepreneurs saw the vacant buildings as an opportunity to start a business or continue their businesses. This showed hope for Detroit because people might be attracted to these businesses.

    6. Ms. Griffin argues that this won't be enough to revitalize the city because going back to agricultural roots won't attract people to the city and only get rid of the residential areas.

    7. The strategic plan of Detroit Future City is different because they plan to create unique agricultural structures such as surface lakes and more buildings for business. This plan is a lesson in urban planning because it shows that you should try to create new better things in life.

    8. The live-make neighborhoods reflect on the three imperatives because the three imperatives will need to be used to turn the abandon structures and use them as new buildings.

    9. I agree that an urban planner cannot save a city because it would take more than one person to help a city that is bankrupt and has lost so much of it's population. The Urban Planner also is unable to get people to purchase the houses in Detroit making it a challenge to re-populate the city. In addition, The planner cannot fix a city without the ideas of the people.

    10. This talk gives me ideas for the final project because it shows that you should make your city live up to the people's needs.

    4. 3 ways that a depleted population results in the decline of a city was the vacant property, illegal dumping, rising water.
    5. the third migration was when they started business
    6. Ms. Griffin argue planting a garden isn’t enough to revitalize a city because it takes up space they could use for prperty.
    7. the strategic plan of Detroit Future City different because they wanted to bring more people in and to create stuff like surface lakes.
    8. “live-make” neighborhood reflect the 3 imperatives Ms. Griffin argues are essential to making the Detroit Future City Plan work to bring back people.
9.i agree because a urban planner will needs more people to help them.

  11. 1- Detroit represented the American dream for the African-American that arrived durning the the first migration, they moved from south to north because of job opportunities.
2- The primary businesses of Detroit in the early days was fixing, repairing and selling cars was a everyday thing.
3- The second migration was different from the first migration because the city of Detroit decrease the population so people decided to leave their houses abandoned.
4- Three ways that a depleted population results in the decline of a city is because of illegal dumping, people not buying stuff from stores and electricity and water increasing the cost.
5- The third migration represents hope for Detroit because abandoned stores became opportunity to make new jobs and new businesses.
6- Ms. Griffin argues that planting wasn't enough to revitalize a city because planting is taking spaces for people to live and to have opportunities to make it businesses stabled.
7 - The plan to make the Detroit is making more agriculture things and more buildings instead of small houses another thing they want to add to the Detroit is lakes.
8- "Live make" neighborhood reflect the 3 Imperative future plans work is by making stable buildings to attract the people back and to increase the population.
9- I agree with Ms. Griffin because a urban planner cannot save a city. The city is made of people and people make the city. Another thing is because if there's not enough people who's going to help you build the houses and businesses. Without the people you cant make a stable city or a better environment In Detroit.
10- This Ted talk video gives me ideas for my final project because I will not add a lot of green or planting stuff in my city. I would add planting or growing natural fruits But not a lot of natural growth because I know that won't attract my city as much as I want me to be. My population would decrease instead of increasing.

  12. 1. In the early history of Detroit, Detroit represented the American Dream for African Americans from the South who arrived during the First Migration by being the state that many African people migrated to for a better life. A chance for steady work and to buy a house one day. Many of these people were attempting to escape the racism and violence, in the South directed towards people of color. These people believed they would be more successful and happy in the Industrialized city, Detroit.
    2. The primary business of Detroit in it's early days was the Automobile industry, and other Industrial jobs.
    3. The Second Migration was different from the First Migration, because instead of fleeing to the city people were fleeing to the suburbs and it was not beneficial for the city of Detroit. The city lost 60% percent of it's population and it has a negative effect on the economy. The Second Migration negatively affected the city of Detroit in general,
    4. The depleted population results in a lack of jobs. Another result of the depleted population is a vast amount of vacant property and homes. Vacant properties are being used for illegal activities often. The depleted population means an increase in the cost of living for residents. The cost for water, electricity, and is more expensive, because there are not as many people to pay property taxes.
    5. The Third Migration is enterupaneers coming and seeing that the vacant lands could be the opportunity to start successful businesses. There are also manufacturing companies migrating to Detroit for the innovations and skilled workers. The Third Migration represents hope for Detroit , because it was a boost to the economy and good step towards Detroit becoming alive again.
    6. Ms.Griffin argues planting a garden isn't enough to revitalize the city, because while this helps the issue with vacant lots either not being used or being used for illegal activities, the population is still depleted and the residents need more job opportunities. Ms.Griffin wants Detroit to remain a Industrialized city.
    7. The strategic plan of Detroit Future City is different, because it's a plan to make improvements and use new ideas to improve the city. They want to make the city better than before, more prosperous and sustainable. This plan for Detroit is a lesson in urban planning and in life, because it's saying that change is a good thing. That you should continue to improve and be open to new ideas.
    8. The “live-make” neighborhood reflects the 3 imperatives by increasing the number of jobs, using vacant land for entrepreneurial uses, and stabilizing the community.
    9. I agree that an urban planner cannot save a city. I will take more than just urban planners to save a city. It takes a city people's to come together and make change. Just one person alone or a small group cannot do this. I think to save a city, there has to be many people cooperating and agreeing on plans. One person cannot save a city, because others need to have input and be happy with living in the city.
    10. This talk continues to convince me that I should attempt to make my city as sustainable as possible and think about future generations while designing it. One idea that I would like to include in my final project is urban agriculture and the use of community gardens. I think it's a good idea, because it can give the city natural resources and something like, a community garden helps residents come together. I would like to also use land for water management and research plots in my final project.

    4. 3 ways that a depleted population results in the decline of a city was the the illegal dumping of garbage.
5..The third migration helped Detroit by people needing empty spaces to make business.
6.ms griffin argues that planting a garden insn't enough space because of property.
    7. the detroit city plan is different beacsue they want to build more so people will come back to the city.
    8. “live-make” neighborhood reflect the 3 imperatives Ms. Griffin argues are essential to making the Detroit Future City Plan work because other better things will be build.
    9. Agree because a lot of people need to work on big projects. The projects cant get done by a couple people we need a lot.
    10. This talk gives me ideas for the final project because it shows that I should creatye a city that has the peoples needs.

  15. 1. in the history of Detriot it represented American Dream for African Americans because of all the land it provided for them more space better for agricultural

2.What the primary business of Detriot in the early days is farming and more land.

3.The difference between the first migration and the second is that the second there moving backwards and there ancestors she said would roll over in there graves because there moving backwards.

4.One of the ways that depleted in the population decline in the city one is because of migration another because there wasn't needs or as much goods and they wanted more land.

5.The third migration was to expanded land.

6.I dont personal thinking building garden is going revive a city because its not enough a city needs lands it needs a constant flow of goods and different goods.

7.I think its interesting that they want to urbanize and planning for more rural areas in detriot it can expand to be a glory.

8.To make the Detriot Future City plan to work well the expansion and distribution needs to go well things need to go as is planned n mapped out but i doubt that will happen.

9.I disagree with Ms.Griffin i think that urban planning can save a city but it needs to be planned and will work not a possibility that it won't as long as it was carefully thought and worked on it can grow a city make it more industrialized.

    10. It gives me a lot of ideas on my final project the past homework's have been on more industrial topics on cities and getting around either walking or cars basically transportation.

  16. 1- The African Americans saw Detroit as the American dreams because it offered job opportunities & a chance in buying a home.

2- The automobile industry was the primary business in Detroit.

3- the second migration is different because then people and businesses started to leave the city to the suburbs. This caused the cities economy to go down.

4- the cost for water, electricity and gas cost went up, a lot of properties became vacant and illegal dumping were results of the depleted population.

5- the third migration represented hope for Detroit because it was the beginning of new job opportunists. The third migration was a chance for Detroit to prosper.

6- Ms,Griffin argues that planting gardens doesn't help Detroit because it doesn't help the residents or helps the city prosper.

7- the plan for Detroit is different because it is a way to change the vacant lots in to things that will help update the city. The people wanted the city to be how it was during the first migration but the plan will show them how it is better to move forward and allow a different kind of change.

8- stabilizing the city, adding more jobs &using the vacant land for better use are the 3 imperatives that are necessary to make Detroit a better city.

9- Urban planning will not help Detroit because it wont boost the economy or help with the depleted population. One person cannot fix a city because if people wont allow change then it wont happen.

10- This talk shows me the in order to maintain a good city it most have something to offer the residents so they wont leave. It gives me the idea to add urban agriculture because the city can then be independent and prosperous,

  17. 1- African Americans migrated from the south to the north for the better job opportunities and to better there way of life

2- The automobile industry is the primary business corporation in Detroit

3- The second migration was different than the first migration because,
the second migration instead of migrating people the city it migrated people out

4- What resulted from the lack of population was abandoned houses, a lack of employment, and low income for businesses.

5- The third migration was when young entrepreneurs seen Detroit as a way to make a profit off of the vacant land. Hope was then created for Detroit but apparently not enough hope because you can buy a block in Detroit for $200

6- Ms griffin States that the use of vacant land should be used for more than it is being used for now which is growing food. something that can take place of the vacant land is a recreational area like a park of something for the community to enjoy

7- Getting in touch with the community and finding out what people want instead of assuming what they want will start to bring the population back up to par.

8- The 3 imperatives "live make" makes on a neighborhood reflects Ms.Griffin argument about how essential it is to make the future of Detroit city plan workout do to the new innovations that will be put in place.

9- I disagree, i believe that an urban planner can change the future of a city. even tho it takes more than one person to completely change a city the influences an urban planner makes on a society can make more and more people join him in changing the city

1 – It represented the American Dream because it presented better job opportunities, better and more jobs means more money which is one step closer to that white picket fence.

2 – The ‘Primary’ business of Detroit in its early days was the Automobile Industry.

3 – In the second Migration many people had started to leave Detroit, as a result many of the residences were left empty and abandoned.

4 - No one worked in the city so the economy went to a standstill, since people had left it had resulted in the increase of property taxes and people started illegally dumping things.

5 - The third migration in Detroit was when people started coming from all over and began to buy property and build up the land, it spelt out hope for Detroit because those actions would get it back on its feet again and get the ball rolling for a better economy.

6- Ms. Griffin believes that instead of using empty spaces for recreation and hobby such as gardening that those empty lots should be used as potential business lots that could add to the economy.

7 – Instead of ‘returning it to its former glory’ they want to change things by taking a different approach for an example making buildings. This is a step towards urbanization and in life it shows that following in the footsteps laid out for you isn't always the best choice. Change is good too.

8 – It works because it is revitalizing the old then leaves room for the trendy and new that will make the city itself better and get potential residents piling in.

9 – I agree I believe it is not an urban planner alone that can save a whole city. It takes him/her and all of the people in the city itself to want the final project to be a success; you cannot help something that doesn't want to change. It has to happen by the strong will of the residents and the urban planner combined.

10 – It reminded me not to get my hopes up just because I have a streak of good luck, now all I can think about is how I can make my city successful and maintain it. This TED talk also gave me some good pointers on how to use my space wisely, adding parks and recreational things are okay once in a while but if I have the opportunity to add a business that can boost my economy in any way I’m going to take that chance.

5.) Third migration was a new ascendant of entrepreneurs. The third migration saw abandoned homes and opportunity for entrepreneurial ideas and profit.
6.) There are other things aside from gardens that can be included in the planning. gardens will take up alot of the space. Instead, houses could be built or other human needs.
    7.)
    8.)
9.) I disagree with Ms.Griffin because urban planners plan out the city/town. Therefore, she can use creativity and urban idea to make the city a nice place to live.

    2. The primary business of Detroit in its early days is the automobile industry

    3. The Second Migration was different from the First Migration because instead of bring more people to Detroit, the second migration ran people out of it. This was the downfall of this state.

    4. The 3 ways a depleted population results in the decline of a city is the decreasing in the economy, illegal dumping and the electricity

    5. The Third Migration was the uprising of Detroit after the horrible downfall. It gave opportunities to businesses to get the economy booming again , giving Detroit some hope again

    6. Ms. Griffin argues planting a garden isn’t enough to revitalize a city because its occupying space that could be used for new businesses.

    9. I agree with Ms. Griffin because not only one person can do it by their self. The city needs to come together to help each other and restore their community

This talk gives me ideas for the final project because I feel like even if the city isn’t great and it ends up failing for some reason, I can always restore my community with a little help from people. It also helps me understand that I have to maintain my economy so my community will have no reason to fail.

  24. 1- Detroit represented the Americans who arrived during the migration by moving south to north for a better life and job opportunities.
2- The primary business of Detroit in it's early days was the automobile industry.
3- The second migration was different from the first migration because the people started leaving their homes; causing to decrease the population.
4- 3 ways that a depleted population results in the decline city are the cost of electricity, illegal dumping and rising water.
5- The third migration was when the people saw an opportunity to make their own business.
6- Ms. Griffin argues that planting a garden isn't enough to revitalize a city because she thinks the vacant land should be used for property owners.
7- The strategic plan of Detroit's future city is different because they want to build new homes and surface lakes.
8- The "live-make" neighborhood reflects on the 3 imperatives Ms. Griffin argues because the 3 imperatives need to be used in order to bring the people back to the city and increase the population again.
9- I agree with Ms. Griffin because people have to contribute together also think about each others plans for the city and see if the economy will make a change in the city.
10- This talk can give me ideas for my final project because it tells me how to build things up to the people's needs and not only the needs of the city.

  25. 1.) African Americans had better living conditions and more job opportunities.

2.) The primary business was the automotive industry.

3.) During the Second Migration, people left homes, so the population decreased. Not many people were left from the First Migration.

4.) The Third Migration depleted population because of the ilegal dumping (not a clean environment), rising of the water, and the city's electric cost.

5.) The Third Migration showed hope that people came and went to try new businesses. They tried and have created some nice businesses and local stores.

6.) Ms. Guffin argues that we should do more. We have to do more than just planting. We have to rise up together as a team and work together. We should do help the city for what they need.

7.) We should build better and nice homes, businesses, and buildings so that people would wanna come back to Detroit and live in their urban city, how they used to.

8.) The 3 imperatives Mrs. Griffin argued for essential to making Detroit a future city plan work is all reflected upon the "live-make" wood by new things that people might start to build.

9.) A urban city planner, might save money because he is not wasting the money on something not that important. The money should go towards making the community and better environment, safe bike and bus lanes. More parks and less space getting taken up. Make a home for the ones that need one.

10.) This helped me, by letting me know what people went through. Those rough times. For my final project, i know now how to organize it,because I can make a home for those that don't have one and things like that.

    2) In Detroit the major industry that made the most income was the Automobile.
    3) The major difference in the First Migration and the Second Migration is how many people decided to up and leave which leaves the population decreasing.
    4) A big reason for the decrease in population was waste dumping and the gas electricity.
    5) The third migration really helped Detroit in hard times people in the business world saw what the city can be and they bought and move their businesses in and make money.
    6) She feels that everybody has the ability to come together and work on the beautiful place you live on to make it a dream.
    7) In order for the city to strive they need to think of ways to bring tourists in and like what they see. Then they could start building homes.
    8) "Live-make" is a concept that will help Detroit bring in new faces that will create jobs and places for people to live and make the economy and community strive.
    9) It's kind of half for me with this, because I feel that urban planners aren't going to satisfy everyone's needs or pleasure. Also, in order to urbanized you need to move the people out to bring new people. That would leave a lot homeless and struggling.
    10) This helped me because it showed me that any city no matter how good it is at one point it could always go through changes and struggle.

the african amercians have came to the north that changes their life

the changes in the city of detroit is the automobile industry

the differences was that they came to migrate in this great world

the great city in this population is the less population in the city

the third migation was to create alot of homes owning alot of stores an starting alot of buisness

ms. griffen was building alpt of vacant spaces to create alot of space to start buisness

that we should built more things to create alot of buildings and homes to built a great city in detroit

the home, buildings are in a good neighborhood that is a very urban. style city

i agree with the people being rural coming together as one helping each other even the new people that just came helping to fix the community make it better

This gives me alot of ideas for this upcoming final project that i have create a lot of spaces on the grid scale /street to design a better, nice and looking city

5 - the third migration was a new hope for detroit. It represented hope for detroit because it could of helped them in new ways of living in their city.

6 - because of the fact that it would be greener but it would have the enough people to have in that particar city

7 - because it can help them be how it was but more different to what it actually looks like. Its a lesson both in urban planning and in life because it can change the way detroit is living as a city and as people

8 - it can help make it work because it can turn the abandoned buildings into new buildings.

The Second Migration negatively affected the city of Detroit in general
4.A depleted population results in the decline of a city because of accuracy which shows how much people want it , invovlement because a city needs to fix itself, and helping out in the communitys would all lead to a depleted population.

  40. 1. In the early history of Detroit, how did Detroit represent the American Dream for African-Americans who arrived during the First Migration?
Detroit represented the area in which the African Americans came for a better life during the First Migration
    2. What was the primary business of Detroit in its early days?
The primary business of Detroit was the car assembly industry.
    3. How was the Second Migration different from the First Migration? What happened to the city of Detroit as a result?
It was different because during the first time many migrated to Detroit, and during the Second Migration, many people were actually leaving Detroit.
    4. Identify 3 ways that a depleted population results in the decline of a city?
Decrease in population, rising water and illegal dumping.
    5. What was the Third Migration? How did the Third Migration represent hope for Detroit?
The Third Migration was was when people from many different places/areas came to move into Detroit to buy land and.or expand their property in which represented hope for Detroit by revealing how much people wanted to build up the area for the better and make it a better habitat overall.
    6. Many Detroiters took control of vacant lots and began to build community gardens. Why does Ms. Griffin argue planting a garden isn’t enough to revitalize a city?
Ms. Griffin argues that planting a garden isnt enough, because planting a garden is not enough to change a whole area. While it may be nice to look at, it will not be enough to make living there that much more sustainable.
    7. When many people think of revitalizing a city the first instinct is to return the city to” the glory of what it was”. How is the strategic plan of Detroit Future City different? How is this plan for Detroit a lesson both in urban planning and in life?
The strategic plan of Detroit is different because in order to return a city to "the glory of what is was" you will need to destroy many buildings and areas, whereas Detroit's plan was to use abandoned buildings and/or open or semi destroyed areas to revitalize it and make it a new building to reside in and make it more sustainable. In urban planning, as well as in life, you cannot always go back and change what happened in the past, but only make the best of the past for the future.
    8. How does the “live-make” neighborhood reflect the 3 imperatives Ms. Griffin argues are essential to making the Detroit Future City Plan work?
new innovative ideas would have to happen in order to bring back the larger population that previously existed in the city
    9. Ms. Griffin argues at the beginning of the talk that an urban planner cannot save a city. After seeing the talk in it’s entirety, do you agree? Disagree? Explain using 3 reasons.
I agree, because one person cannot not change a large area entirely. while the may be able to better and/or make a few things worse, they cannot change the area entirely because of all of the people residing there. You cannot please everyone. you also should have a body of planners this way new ideas might come to mind that that one person did not have previously.

    10. In which specific ways does this talk give you ideas for the final project?
In the fashion that i should make my city very appealing this way people would not want to leave because of unsustainable life, and to show that instead of causing destruction, we should make creation.

    7. The stretigic plan for the future of detroit is different because they plan on putting unique sculptures, new homes and surface lakes

  42. 1. Early Detroit represented the American Dream for the First Migration African Americans because due it's urbanization and industrialization, it created better life and opportunities for them.
    2. In it's early days, Detroit's primary business was the automobile industry, causing it have the nickname "Motorcity"
3.The second migration was different from the first migration because people were leaving the city of Detroit instead of moving into it. As a result, their population dropped and their economy fell.
    4. Three ways that a depleted population results in the decline of a city are an abandonment of homes, increase in utilities cost and an increase in crime due to these harsh conditions.
5.The Third Migration was entrepreneurs purchasing these vacant properties in hopes of starting or expanding their business in Detroit. This showed hope for Detroit because this would attract people to Detroit and boost its economy.
    6. Ms.Griffin argues that planting a garden isn't enough to fix a city because they would occupy valuable space that Detroit could build on.
7.The strategic plan of Detroit Future City is different because it included the creation of unique structures and better buildings for businesses rather than "returning it to its former glory". This plan is a lesson for urban planning and life because it shows us to improve and redesign in a unique manner rather than make slight changes to the old.
8.The "live-make" neighborhood reflects the 3 imperatives by revitalizing the vacant buildings, increasing the amount of jobs and improving the city of Detroit.
    9. I agree with Ms.Griffin that an urban planner can't save a city. They can only lay the design in which the people of that city must follow. Changing a city is a city effort and can only happen if a vast majority of the people come together and make that change happen.
10.This talk gives me the idea of leaving room on the table for a city to grow. If you're trying to maximize a city forever, it will just plummet quicker. I would also like to provide something in my city that would bring the people of the community together, maybe an urban garden where everyone can come together and improve their surroundings in an environmentally friendly way.

  43. 1. Back in the day, Detroit was an upcoming motorist city with a population of 2 million people. This city was the American dream for African Americans.

    2. Detroit's primary business was the automobile industry.

    3. During the First Migration, many people moved to Detroit for a happier life. However, during the Second Migration, people started to leave Detroit for an even happier life.

    4. Due to the population decrease, many homes were abandoned. Property tax increased, causing even MORE people to leave. Littering was such a big thing in Detroit (still is), leaving the environment dirty and disgusting looking. Finally, sewage levels in Detroit has skyrocketed. That's bad.

    5. A whole new group of people came in, started to build new homes and businesses. The businesses weren't major franchises, they were community businesses. Money that went there, would go back into the community.

    6. A small little garden isn't enough to fix the city. Also, gardens cause problems. Gardens are full of snakes, rodents, and poisonous berries. What if an inconsiderate kid went into one? What then?

    7. They want to try a different approach, an agriculture approach. Unlike the residential approach, this new structures won't be abandoned and left for the rats.

    8. The live-make neighborhood will take vacant land, give it a make over, and it will be good as new! Old, abandoned houses will finally see the light of day.

    9. I agree, a resident of Detroit will be more fit than an urban planner. A resident will know what the people wants, not some outsider.

    10. I'll make sure to keep the taxes nice and low, add some windmills and public housing, and make sure my city doesn't turn out like Detroit. #1 Goal.

  44. 1 – It represented the American Dream because it presented better job opportunities, better and more jobs means more money which is one step closer to that white picket fence.

6- Ms. Griffin believes that buliding a garden isnt enough to help the city of Detroit

7 – Instead of ‘returning it to its former glory’ they want to change by making bettermaking buildings, new structures, and new store s for the economy.

8 – It should works because it is revitalizing the old then leaves room for the trendy and new that will make the city itself better and get potential residents piling in.

9 – I agree and  believe that a citizen from Detroit will be fit than a urban planner. Citzens of Detroit has experienced the city a planner so they know more than them.

10 – It helps with my city project because it helps me overlook the mistqkes thwt Detroit made and try not to do the same as tgem. I would but safer houses and cheape on each block.
