ReplyDelete1 – Retro fitting suburbia means taking old places and fixing them up, using empty areas to make things such as parking lots and reanimating the land from the ground up.
2 – The suburbs are actually more a burden than a blessing because 1) in suburbs you leak a lot more energy than in urban area’s 2) The suburbs cause people to drive twice the average amount and caused us to rely on foreign fuel 3) Suburban living can be linked with sedentary lifestyles that can cause things like obesity that ruins the health of Americans.
3 – According to Ms. Jones Retrofitting is the more practical option when it comes to urban planning because with retrofitting you don’t have to use more land than necessary, leave the tree’s alone and focus on fixing up what you already have.
4 –Underperforming Asphalt is underused and unused parking lots that keep reoccurring all over the place as we expand our reach on the land.
5 –Something’s that can be done with a ‘dead mall’ is changing it into a smaller hospital, since malls already have parking lots, once its transformed into a hospital you will already have a plentiful amount of parking for people to use.
6 –
7 –My favorite retrofit is Mashpeer commons; it shows a great use of spaces in my opinion and really shows the meaning of ‘urbanization’. Building on top of what you already have and making it 100% better you its residents.
8 –Some retrofitting challenges for the future are finding out what decisions should be made, like for an example, should you densify an area or regreen it?
9 –The challenge she presents to the audience is for them to join in on the protest for sustainable living in suburban areas.
10 – Retrofitting requires a cultural shift because in order for an area to grow you need the input an assistance of others of all races to help start a stable economy. An area also requires and urban planning shift to change the ‘flow’ of an area and bring in more potential residents and customers by fixing up the area.
11 – I believe retrofitting is a viable idea because looking at some examples and previous plans of cities and towns that have failed terribly; I noticed that keeping cities interesting but space efficient is important. Retrofitting keeps all those in mind as it helps recreate an area to hold peoples interest while saving the environment by preventing mass expansion.
12 – I believe the TED ‘Brilliant Designs to Address Overcrowding in Cities’ present similar designs as the ones presented by Ms. Jones.
13 – It can help me keep in mind about special value and the importance of keeping my area green; if a place is rundown I can fix it up or expand a small part of it to bring more people in.
14 – I do believe it is possible to create an urban lifestyle within a suburban environment, using the example of turning the malls into art zones that the public can use. You are adding new things to the community but just building on top of what you already have.
1. Retrofitting Suburbia is defined as taking old worn out places or "dead spaces" such as malls or parking spaces and fixing them up or making them a brand new sustainable building or area.
ReplyDelete2. According to Ms. Jones, the suburbs are more a burden than a blessing because more energy is leaked into the air through the exterior surfaces of buildings and automobiles which eventually causes us to use more fuel. Urban cities increase in obesity because people are more reliable on one area for their needs. The foreign fuels are doubled because more people rely on their cars for transportation.
3. According to Ms. Jones, retrofitting is more a practical option because they have found over 80 "dead" spaces and these spaces are renewable and even more useful than expanding the land and destroying the potential wildlife in the area.
4. According to Ms. Jones “under-performing asphalt” is under-used parking lots in or out of an auto-dependent suburban area.
5. According to Ms. Jones some things that can be done with a “dead mall” or “dead office park” are re-habitation. For example, a dead mall, Crestwood Court Mall in St. Louis, MO has been re-inhabited as an art-space. Other malls have been re-inhabited as nursing homes, universities, office space, etc. Other ideas may involve skate-parks, sport centers or gyms.
6. Jane Jacobs the urban planning critic from the 60s would disagree with Ms. Jones ideas because she believed that urban renewal did not meet up to the needs of the people in the area. She believed that if you were to renew the area or "retrofit" the area then the people's ideas should become a main priority.
7. My favorite retrofit is Mashpeer commons because it showed a more urban design of retrofitting suburbia.
8. The retrofitting challenges for the future would be finding new spaces and new areas to retrofit, because eventually these retrofitted areas would become more reliable attractions and become a main objective or resource for the economy or society.
9. The challenge that Ms. Jones presents for the audience is that they need to protest and support the retrofitting of suburban areas to help create sustainable living areas and conditions.
10. Retrofitting require a cultural shift as well as an urban planning shift because eventually people will need to move onto other priorities to rely on if one area the you may or may not have relied on in the past is being renewed as a new place for entertainment, education or food.
11. I believe that retrofitting is a viable idea, however I wouldn't know whether or not the people of my city or civilization would agree with these ideas. Attracting new ideas would eventually result into the people of the culture leaving or changing their ideas of life.
12. I believe that the TED "Brilliant Designs to Address Overcrowding in Cities" present similar designs to the designs presented by Ms. Jones.
13. This TED talk can help me begin to build my city because it shows that the people in city have ideas too and should be able to keep their own culture and expand on diversity.
14. I believe that it is possible to create an urban lifestyle with a suburban environment because you can mix the urban ideas with the suburban ideas.
1- retrofitting suburbia - is taking things that has worked in the past and apply them with much more technological advancements in the suburbs.
ReplyDelete2- Suburbs are actually more a burden than a blessing that we should consider retrofitting suburbia because it will bring a little bit of city life to the suburbs.
3- According to Ms. Jones why is retrofitting the more practical option when it comes to urban planning because instead of knocking down buildings and creating new ones you can improve the old ones and not only save time and money but they will be more structurally sound.
4- Under-performing asphalt is barely used or vacant parking lots that more than likely wont be used because they are not needed.
5- Some things that can be done with a “dead mall” or “dead office park” is making them a place of recreation and let the community used the unused space.
6- Jane Jacobs, the urban planning critics from the 60's, would disagree with Ms. Jones ideas because she believed that a more modern environment would fulfill the needs of the people.
7-
8- One of the retrofitting challenges for the future would be is it more to improve this building or to build an entire new building.
9- The challenge of protest is being challenged by Ms. Jones, this protest is based the on going conflict in suburban areas which is sustainability.
10- Retrofitting requires a cultural shift as well as an urban planning shift in order to maintain stability in economical status of the city and by making it more appealing to the community
11- i think retrofitting is a viable idea in light of all i have learned about urban planning by taking ideas of what has worked in the past and applying it or what has not worked in the past and avoiding the same issues.
12- i Believe ted talk A New Vision For Detroit presents similar ideas to the ones presented by Ms. Jones
13- i Can use this ted talk by considering if i want to bring the urban life to the suburbs or not and if it will be a difficult task considering i have a mountain rage near by or will it be to my benefit>
14- i believe that creating an urban lifestyle in a suburban setting is not possible because the urban lifestyle has certain things like high rises and if a city has multiple high rises its considered a city
1)Retro ftoing suburbia means taking old area and making new. Reusinf the enviroment.
ReplyDelete2)Accordng to Ms.Jones the suburbs are a burden than blessing.Urban cities have more a chance to have/gain obese people.
3) Over 80 unused spaces were found. These spaces could be used for something useful. And it wont destroy wildlife a cording to Ms.Jones.
4) "Under Performing Asphalt" is unused parking lots in unnecessary areas.
5) Something that can be used with "dead mall" is you can put a park, nursing home, hospital, recreation center, School, the possibilities are endless.
6) I think Jane jacobs would agree because Jane Jacobs believed in the idea Of reusable land. Jane believed in not wasting land but she also believed in incorporating what the people wanted intonthe city.
7)
8) Regreen or coagulate (make it dense) a land. That is a challenging decision.
9) The challenge is living a sustainable lifestyle.
10) If younplan a city and it is not constructed correctly than its a waste of money and time. Planning and assistance and ideas from the people should be Implemented.
11) I think It kind of is ruisng land isnt a bad idea.
12) "Brilliant Designs to adress overcrowding in cities" presents the same designs.
13) This Ted Talk can help me see that if there is extra space we want to use it , not let it go to waste, but id think I can use it with a mountain range.
14) Suburban areas are too different it can never be like a urban area.Building and stores and big businesses are in urban areas not suburban areas.
1.In light of the definitions above and that I learned from the speaker, “retro-fitting suburbia means technology being introduced into smaller cities that are close to larger cities.
ReplyDelete2. According to Ms. Jones, suburbs are actually more of a burden by being a blessing that we should consider retrofitting suburbia. There are dead areas such as malls and offices. Tearing down trees which messes up the environment. The change in climate.
3. According to Ms. Jones retrofitting is more of a practical option when it comes to urban planning by major demographic shifts.
4. According to Ms. Jones “under-performing asphalt” is under used parking lots and auto dependent suburban areas.
5. Some things that can be done with “dead malls” or “dead office parks” are re-inhabitation. For example of a dead mall the Crestwood court mall in St. Louis are used as art space.
6. Jane Jacobs would disagree because she believed urban renewal didn’t meet up the needs to the people of the area.
7. My favorite examples of retrofits are revamping of dead areas because I hate eye soars especially if that would happen in my city.
8. The retrofitting challenges in the future are how to change everything to make it benefit society.
9. The challenge Ms. Jones presents to the audience is plan retrofitting for the best places and which places are the best places to turn green.
10. Retrofitting requires a cultural shift as well as an urban planning shift because they need to maintain stability in economical status of the city.
11. I think retrofitting is viable idea in light of all I’ve learned on urban planning because of taking ideas of what worked in the past and applying it or what hasn’t worked in the past.
12. The other TED talks that I’ve watched present similar ideas to the ones presented by Ms. Jones, for example a new vision for Detroit.
13. I can use this TED talk to build my “future city” by have better placing for smaller areas of cities and larger areas of cities.
14. I think it’s possible to create an urban lifestyle within a suburban environment because these changes are for everything to look better and this could bring a healthier environment.
1. Retro-fitting Suburbia takes old, abandoned lots (malls, factory, etc) and changes them into something new.
ReplyDelete2. In a suburb, you must travel a considerably long distance to get where you want to go. Gas and fuel tariffs will increase because most people rely on cars for transportation. Obesity rates will increase, because people are too reliant on one area.
3. Ms. TED Talker claims that urban planning is dead. 80 unused spaces on renewable land has been found. Retro-fitting is a lot less expensive than tearing a lot down, that's for sure.
4. Under performing asphalt is an under performing parking lot.
5.The dead mall can be turned into a recreational center. The dead office park can be turned into a TV production studio. That will go well.
6. Jane Jacobs, the urban planner from the 60s would most likely disagree. She would believe urban renewal would not live up to everyone's expectations.
7. My all time favorite would have to be the one with urban design. I didn't quite hear her, I think she said Mash pier?
8. Finding new spaces would definitely be a major problem. Everyone runs out of space evenutally.
9. CHALLENGE: She wants the audience to protest for retro-fitting. Yeah! Enough with urban planners!
10. At the end of the day, the community is going to have the final input. This shift will also grant the people economic stability.
11. I don't believe retro-fitting Suburia is a swell idea. What happens when you run out of space? Keep re-designing? It will destroy the culture and the essence of the city.
12. The TED talk about Detroit has similar ideals to that of Ms. Jones. Re-design!
13. When I run out of space on my map I will make sure to refer back to this TED talk and go through the processes of retro-fitting.
14. I do believe its possible, but it won't be easy. An urban lifestyle in that kind of enviroment will cause you to use transportation a lot. Transportation = Pollution.
2.
1) In light of the definitions above and what I learn from the speaker retro- fitting suburbia means takeing old areas and makeing them into new buildings or parks or you make them sustainable.
ReplyDelete2). Acocording to ms. Jones suburbs are more a burden then being a blessing because more energy is going in to the air from cars trians and buildings. The urban city increase in obesity because the people stay in one are for things . The foreign fuels go up high because people use they cars for transportion.
3). According to ms jones retrofitting is more a practical option because it was 80 unused spaces in they can use it to build more buildings and mor land for the suburbs.
4). According to ms jones under performing asphalt is unused parking lots in places it don't have to be at.
5) some thing that can be done with mall that is not in use or a building you make jobs for the people schools or more stores churches and bike centers.
6) Jane Jacobs from the urban planning critics from the 60s would disagree with ms jones because she believed that modern environment would have the needs for the people in that city
7). My favorite would have to be the is unban design because it shows the care for the reidents in that city
8). The retrofitting challenges for the future would be you have find new space and areas because people will relia on that place or resource
9) The challenge that ms jones present for the people is that they need to protest and support the retrofitting of suburban areas to help have better livening
10). Retroifitting require a cultural shift as urban planning shift because people will have to move and they homes so can have better community's
11). I thank retrofitting is a good idea because you have find what work in the past and what didn't work in the past
12). I believed the brilliant designs to address overcrowded in cites present the same designs
13). This talk can help me because I can unused to stuff in make it in to some thing new like a building
14) I thank it is possible because to create a unban city in suburban area it change in make every thing look better and can be health for the environment
8. The retrofitting challenges for the future would be finding new spaces and new areas to retrofit, because eventually these retrofitted areas would become more reliable attractions and become a main objective or resource for the economy or society.

14. I believe that it is possible to create an urban lifestyle with a suburban environment because you can mix the urban ideas with the suburban ideas.
1 –The definition of Retro fitting suburbia means taking outand old city and making it newer. Take a empty spave and urbanized it.
2 – The suburbs are actually more a burden than a burden blessing because The suburbs can cause people to drive twice the average about than it would the its fuel , Suburban living can caise health issues
Like for example obesity.
3 – Retrofitting is the more practical option when it comes to urban planning because with retrofitting when you retro fit a cit, you domt have to take down its ecosystem

5 –Something’s that can be done with a ‘dead mall’ is making another buliding that helps the people. For example, a police station so their would be less crime innam neighborhood
6 –Jane jacobs from thhe 60s would probably disagree. She wouldnt believe urban renewing at that time.
7 –My favorite retrofit is Mashpeer commons; it shows a great use of spaces for cities in my opinion.

1) Retro-fitting Suburbia is the practice of talking old buildings and areas and making them new with the help of technology.
ReplyDelete2) Jones explains how she feels suburbs are a burden because since things aren't as close in the suburbs such as the city people are forced to use more cars as transportation, which causes pollution.
3) Jones believes that retro-fitting is the smartest idea for the cities because it was recorded that there is over 80 spaces that are abandoned and we could make these places useful.
4) Jones feels under-performing asphalts are used in a lot of parking lot in the suburbs.
5) According to Ms. Jones we can use these "dead" spaces such as malls and we can rebuild new and needed centers where people can get help, such as the Crestwood Court Mall in St. Louis which was made into an art center.
6) Jane Jacobs was an urban planning critic form the 60s who would disagree with Ms. Jones' idea. Jacobs feels that people in these suburbs are still going to need things that they aren't able to get without either a car or the public transportation.
7) Mashpeer commons has to be my favorite urban design because it really displays the are of retro-fitting.
8) In the future I think the problem of retro-fitting is finding new dead areas because I feel that the city committee and government are already going to retro-fit every are they can for profit.
9) Jones is explaining to us the people that we need to protest and support retro-fitting abandoned spaces across the country.
10) To make change it requires a cultural shift because in order for these areas to strive they need people to live and rely off the this area.
11) Retro-fitting is a good concept and all, but I feel that it would be a big smack in the face if we spend all our money on rebuilding a new area and that area doesn't make any money back or profit.
12) All the TED talks have new ideas and aspects of building cities, but A New Vision of Detroit is similar to this one because its basically explaining how we need to clean up the streets of Detroit and try to bring people back into the city to see how beautiful it is.
13) This TED talk shows me that even if I have an open space in my city I can turn it into something useful.
14) I believe you can create an urban lifestyle with a suburban are, but I feel that the people living in that area already wouldn't be ready for the change of lifestyle.

1)>it is just changing the city to fit the new generation of people who live there.
ReplyDelete2)>it a burden because of the electricity of residents there are very high at cost, the rate for obesity has increased in households, more people use cars as there main source of transportation which causes z log of pollution.
3>it's more practical because all you have to do is just change what's already there and leave the environment alone.
4> more land and space to do future plans which be buffets the people
5>you could make them into more land and space doc future plans called asphalt urban rebuilding .
6>she would agree because she son doc the saved the forest person and that just fixing things you already have is just more cheaper than destroying it then rebuilding it.
7>taking this space and making alpacas where more human recreation was more desired.
8>that they don't know what will fit what people caucus doc tbs generation gaps between the baby bonnets and other generations that probably won't have kids.
9>the challenged that she is prepossessing was to live in the place called surbyrbia In there own neighborhood.
10>with the new generations and everything plus you have to have someone that can relate to the new style that they find acceptable.
11>it's a viable idea because with things changing in every generations things change the people change as well as the city due to things getting old fast and trends appearing much more.
12>the Ted talk with ms cater I believe in which she was talk v bout. Taking paint and just fixing up a parking lot for human recreation needs.
13>this ted talk helps me by if building dong work out song abandon change it into something else to Jennifer the changing times.
14>I believe it's impossible because the more you urbanize an area the more of a carbon footprint you leave in that area.

1. I learned that "retro-fitting suburbia" means auto-dependent, underutilized suburbs into vibrant, sustainable communities, our nation's malls are dying as a result of an over-saturated market.
ReplyDelete2. According to Ms. Jones suburbs are actually more a burden because there taking away green environment there expanding parking lots, another thing is that they use more cares and that cause obesity.
3. According to Ms.Jones retrofitting is the more practical option when it comes to urban planning because they have found dead malls or even dead office and they have used it for useful things.
4. According to Ms. Jones Under-performing asphalt means abandoned parking space.
5. Something's that could be done withretrofitting is the more practical option when it comes to urban planning because dead malls and dead offices are library's, nurse office & schools another thing I think could be done is police departments and hospital to help the people from the neighborhood .
6. Jane Jacob the urban planning critics from the 60's would agree with Ms.jones idea because Jane believed that reusable plans were great she believed that if you reduce things it's helpful for you and the environment.
7 . My favorite one would have to be urban design because it includes everyone In the city not just half the people that live there, many people feel like there involved in something.
8. The retrofitting challenges for the future are to find open spaces because now that they are using "dead" malls for library and other main thing these things are gonna become important and there gonna have to cut down natural resource which could cause a problem
9. The challenge that Ms. Jones gives the audience is that they should protest for retro-fitting, living a sustainable life.
10. Retro-fitting requires a cultural shift and as well as a urban shift because they will show the community what best, you gotta plan a well eatable city in order to have your community better.
11. In my opinion I don't believe that retro-fitting is good cause yes it helps community but when you don't find dead space where are you gonna put the other stuff, there obviously gonna cut natural resource.
12. I believe that the ted talk that had a similar thing is the one from Detroit cause Detroit has a lot of abandoned stores and they could re-deign the stores from Detroit and the pollution would increase.
13. This ted talk could help me in a way because I would have a lot of natural resource I wouldn't like to have a little, and I would put things close to my community for them to walk and decrease obesity.
14. I think that you can't build a urban life style with a suburban environment because there's things the community not like and that's gonna make them move to another place in which they like.
•Llulisa Taveras
1. Retro-fitting suburbia as defined by the speaker means taking old places and turning them into new and better places.
ReplyDelete2. According to Ms. Jones, the reason why suburbs are actually more of a burden than a blessing because they cause the climate to change, they are harming the environment, a lot of energy is being used in cars because mostly everyone is using cars as their form of transportation.
3. The reason why retrofitting is the more partial option when is comes to urban planning because the places that have not been used can be used for the suburbs.
4. Under-performing asphalt is defined as abandoned parking spaces.
5. Some of the things that can be done with a dead mall or a dead office park is that they can be rebuilt into things that can help the neighborhood for example make a school, hospital or a police station.
6. Jane Jacobs would disagree with Ms. Jones ideas because Jane Jacob feels that even if the area is fixed peoples needs won't still get fixed and the things people already have they are still going to need them.
7. Examples of my favorite retrofits is the Mashpeer commons because it shows what urbanization really is and it's trying to make residents more better.
8. The retrofitting challenges for the future are what can be made from what we already have and how can it be improved and rebuilt again.
9. The challenge Ms. Jones presents to the audience is to protest for retrofitting.
10. Retrofitting requires a cultural shift as well as an urban planning shift is because there need to be stability in the economical status of the city.
11. Retrofitting is a viable idea in light of all from what I have learned about urban planning but I think retrofitting requires a lot of money to rebuild everything but if it can help the neighborhood and people it can be worth it.
12. Other TED that presents similar ideas to the ones presented by Ms. Jones is Brilliant Designs to Address Overcrowding in Cities.
13. This TED talk can be used when we make our future cities because this shows what people need and how things that aren't needed can be rebuilt into something newer and better.
14. I think it is possible to create an urban lifestyle within a suburban environment because you are just taking what you already have but rebuilding it to something better that can help the people.

1. Retrofitting is when you take the old and simply reconstructing it, so that it can fit urabanized standards.
ReplyDelete2.The suburbs seem more like a burden then a blessing because one we wastealot of gas and fuel which can cause a great impact on pollution, it also causes climate change which can effect our living conditions , and another reason is health issues because everything is right next to us it cause obesity we are cattered to.
3.Retrofitting becomes more practical because instead of us focusing on the things that do not matter we can finally focus on the things that do.
4.According to Ms.Jones underperforming asphalt is parking lots and paks that are not being used just taking up space.
5.You can take a "dead mall" and change it into a shelter for people who need a place to stay. You can even make it into a daycare center or a hospital something for the people.
6.Yes she would have agreed with Ms.Jones because she believed that urbanization was not living up to the standards of the people and that is what Ms.Jone is trying to change.
7.My favorite of retrofitting is revamping the "dead" areas because i believe that these spaces can be used to make a difference in someones life.
8.The retrofitting challenge in the future is trying to make it a better place for people , rather then for others.
9.The challenge that Ms. Jones presents to the audience is living a sustainable life.
10.Retrofitting requires a cultural shift too because cultures start changing and they start impacting people once we are urbanized.Just like with anything when there is a change it effects everyone and everything.
11.Yes i think retrofitting viable idea because when you make things better , you get alot of places with socitey.
12.The other TED talk that provides similar ideas with Ms Jones is Overcrowding cities. Both TED talk about improving urbanization and making a difference.
13.The TED talk can help us build our cities becaus eit helps us figure out what we can do with empty spaces we can make them into more homes, so we should never waste space everything has a reason.
14.Yes it is possible because that is what we are doing now , we are reconstructing buldings and trains and making it into something better for our society.
~Ashley Ramloechn
1) retro fitting is taking a building and shrinking its proportions to urban size.
ReplyDelete2)suberbs are more of a burden because they are farther away from the city then other towns. Therefore this prevents the people from getting medical and police help.
3) retro fitting becomes more convenient for people because the populatik is growing and we need to make more space.
4) asphalt can waste vast spaces by creating parking lots and other places.
5) you can turn dead mall spaces in hospitals or even an orphanage. Dead mall spaces are vast spaces that are empty and in used.
6)yes, she would agree with her because they both see eye to eye when it comes to urbanization. They both think that urbanization is living up to its expectations.
7) the mashpeer commens areu favorite because they show that the impact of urbanization is making a change in peoples Lives. They show that in time urbanization will make lives easier.
8)the rerto fitting challenge in the future is trying to take bigger families and bring them down to smaller spaces that will be something new and difficult.
9)the challenge given to the audience by ms.Jones is taking part Ina sustainable life style and some people might not be able to change.
10)retro fitting will effect everyone. People with big families will be forced to squeeze into small homes people with a lot of stuff will have to give the majority of it. Peoples habits and life style choices will effect them greatly.
11) I agree with retro fitting because you create more living space by giving back space to the earth that we don't use or need. So giving earth back parts of land we don't need will make for a better environment.
12) the ted talk that has the same interpretation of urbanization is the one that talks about over crowding cities. The presenter in that ted talks escapes me at the moment but they both believe that improving ways to urbanize will make for a better and healthy environment.
13) the ted talk helps us design our cites by helping us utilize space accordingly and in a way that makes our residents happy and comfortable.
14) yes, this is possible because today in real life new York city, we are taking spaces that are abandoned renovating them to help our community prosper in a healthy environment
1- taking old worn out places fixing them up or making them a brand new better building or area.
ReplyDelete2- its causing more harm because cause the climate to change, they are harming the environment a lot of energy is being used in cars
3-Retrofitting becomes more practical because instead of us focusing on the things aren't really a big threat to us we can focus on the bigger problem
4-Under-performing asphalt is abandon parking spaces
5- we can build more parks or environmentally friendly areas.
6 he disagrees because he thinks even if the problem is changed people wont change there habit.
7- my favorite design is the urban planning because it shows what a area could become.
8- some challenges are what decisions should be made and how should they be done
9- what he is trying to tell us is support the retrofitting of suburban areas to help have better livening
10- it need a lot of money because a lot of things would have to be built to bring it back to good place
11- i think it is a good idea because it wont only look good for the city, people might start having respect for where they live.
12- other ted talk are similar because all of them are trying to make a better and healthier place to live
13- this ted talk can be used in the future because it could help urban planning so they can know where to place everything
14- yes i think it is possible because we are getting more advance with technology over time
1) retro fitting is when you take a big space and make it smaller being able to make more space.
ReplyDelete2)suberbs are a burden because suburbs are located farther away from cities. Cars create pollution and the farther you drive the more pollution your car creates.
3)retro fitting is practical because it helps people use the things that they need and get rid if the things they don't.
4) according to ms.jones underperforming asphalt is asphalt in parking lots and stuff like that.
5) deadmalls can be turned into orphanages or hospitals housing etc. Things that we actually need in life.
6)yes she would agree because they both see that urbanization isn't doing what its supposed to and they both hope to change that.
7)I think that my favorite idea is the dead areas because we can change them in to places that people really need in order to survive.
8) the challenge in the future is making people cut down on how much they use and want.
9) the challenge she gives the audience is to cut down and live a sustainable life.
10) retro fitting includes changing habits and getting rid of things you don't need. People become attached to items in their homes so retro fitting will become something people will not easily cope with.
11)retro fitting is a viable idea because you create more space and give space back at the same time making it a win win situation.
12) the other ted talk provides the same ideas as today's talk covering the idea of over crowding cities. They both aim to make a change and see that change in urbanization.
13) the talk can help us build our cities in a manner which creates enough space for the people yet make sure the environment is healthy.
14) yes its possible because today in new York we are taking abandoned and unused psaves and making them usable and Eco friendly.
1.Retro fitting suburbia means taking old resources and building them back up such highways, houses, and transportation. 2.According to Ms.Jones the suburbs seem more like a burden then a blessing because we use our cars everyday and its not helping our earth at all because of pollution. 3.Retrofitting is the more practical option when it comes to urban planning is because their was over 80 spaces that were vacant and we can use these spaces to build large stores. 4.Under performing asphalt is when parking lots and parks that are not being used just by taking up space. 5.Some things that can be done with a dead mall is you can change it to a supermarket where people buy their groceries. 6.Jane Jacobs would disagree because with Ms.Jones idea Jane Jacobs believes that if you fix up an area that has already been fix it wouldn't meet peoples needs and people are still going to need that same area that they have been going to for the longest. 7.My favorite of retrofitting is mash peer commons because it represents the art and creation of retrofitting. 8.The retrofitting challenge in the future is to improve my building with as much resources as possible. 9.The challenge that Ms.Jones presents to the audience is we as people need to support retro-fitting to have a sustainable life. 10.Retrofitting requires a cultural shift because cultures change and it starts impacting people once we are urbanized. 11.I believe that retro-fitting is a viable idea however my people and civilization would be overwhelmed by how much money is coming out of my pocket just to build vacant buildings, and houses would affect me putting me eventually in debt just by wasting my money on rebuild ed areas. 12.The TED talk that i think provides similar ideas with Ms Jones is Overcrowding cities because they both talk about improving urbanization and making a change. 13.This TED talk can help me by needing the vacant area for something useful. 14.Yes I do think its possible to create a urban lifestyle to a surburban environment because as we keep on building what we need to build people will like them and see how wondurful these buildings can get once they get famalier with that area of vacant things becoming something else new and different.
ReplyDeleteAccording to Ms. Jones retro-fitting means to take something old and making it new. For example, taking an old building or a park and making it new or better. The suburbs are more of a burden to people because they waste a lot of gas just to get to and from the city. According to Ms. Jones, retrofitting is more of an option because you don't have to use more space than necessary. According to Ms. Jones, Under-performing asphalt are also called abandoned places such as parking lots not in use anymore.
ReplyDeleteSomething's that can be done with places they consider a "dead mall" is creating something new such as a school, hospital, parks etc.
Jane Jacobs would disagree with Ms. Jones. I think that retrofitting is a good idea because doing that would create more job opportunities for people without a job or for people that want something better. Yes I do believe its possible to create an Urban lifestyle in the Suburbs
1.retro-fitting suburbia means takeing old areas and makeing them into new buildings or parks or you make them stable.
ReplyDelete2.Acocording to ms. Jones suburbs are more a burden because more energy from cars are electric things are releaseing into the air.
3.According to ms jones retrofitting is more a practical because it is 80 unused spaces and it could be built buildings in the area.
4.according to ms.jones underperforming asphalt is a parking spaces.
5.dead malls can be used into more things like hospitals, houseing, bussnisses and othere usfull things.
6.i say yes she would agree because would disagree with ms jones because she believed that the modern environment would be good for the people in the city.
7.my favorite i deas was the part about the unban design because they show how much the people need in the city.
8.the challenging is makeing people find new space and areas .
9.the challenge she gives the audience is to stop and protest and support the retrofitting of suburban areas.
10.Retrofitting requires a cultural shift because people will need to move into other places like home.
11.I believe that retrofitting is a viable idea because you have found jobs and you didnt founded jobs back then.
12.this ted talk provides the same interpretation of urbanization about over crowding cities.
13.this talk can help me build my citie by careing for the people in the citie and makeing my citie space for the people and make sure the cities gets good health care.
14.yes because newy york is makeing old areas into more a new area, meaning houses, and parks.
1. In light of the definitions above and what I learned from the speaker “retro-fitting suburbia” is taking old places and revitalizing it.
ReplyDelete2.According to Ms. Jones the suburbs actually more a burden than a blessing that we should consider retrofitting suburbia is because they cause the climate to change, city people have to use more cars, in suburbs you use a lot more energy than in urban area’s.
3. According to Ms. Jones retrofitting the more practical option when it comes to urban planning because we need to think bout what we really need not what we want.
4. “under-performing asphalt” according to Ms. Jones is asphalt means abandoned parking space.
5. some of the things that can be done with a “dead mall” or “dead office park can be mad into schools, libraries.
6. Jane Jacobs the urban planning critic from the 60s would disagree with Ms. Jones ideas because she believed that urban areas would be rebuilt, Ms.Jones because she believed that urbanization was not living up to the standards of the people.
7. My favorite retrofit is revitalizing the dead mall areas because i believe that these spaces can be filled for necessary things that people really need in life.
8. retrofitting challenges for the future are ways for trying to make it better for people as a urbanization.
9. The challenge that Ms. Jones present to the audience is living a sustainable lifestyle.
10. retrofitting require a cultural shift as well as an urban planning shift because cultures start changing when there is a change it effects everyone and everything.
11. I believe that retrofitting is a viable idea because when you make things better it attracts more people, especially if it a new culture.
12. The other TED talk that provides a similar idea Ms Jones is Overcrowding cities Both TED should improvie urbanization and making a difference.
13. .The TED talk can help us build our cities because I can have places that are only necessary for peoples lives.
14. Yes it is possible because that is what we are doing now we are revitalizing some areas.
kyle taylor
1. retrofitting suburbia is rebuilding to advance and become more urban
ReplyDelete2.the suburbs are more of a burden than a blessing because you have to redevelop ,rehabilitate and and reconstruct to become more urban
3.retrofitting is the more practical option when it comes to urbanizing because we can build more sustainable places instead of tearing down
trees
4.underpreforming asphalt is underused parking lots
5.some things that can be done with a dead mall is rehabilitation used for art space or theatergroups
6.jane jacobs would disagree because she bliveed in meeting the peoples standards
7.my favorite retrofit is masheer commons because it stresses the ideas of urbaniziation
8.a retrofitting challenge for the future are whether to regreen or colagate
9.one challenge to the audience is to protest for retro fitting
10.retrofitting would include a cultural shift and an urban planning shift because everyone would have to plan for change
11.i dont think retrofitting is a viable idea because people hate change and are usually always thinking of the negative things that can come out of it
12.ms carters ted talk was similar because it talked about improving green spaces for the better
13.i can use this ted talk when i build my city to remember the importance of green spaces
14.i think its possible to build an urban environment anywhere because in long island they build shopping malls in rural areas too!
1- Retrofitting suburbia means taking and old area and making it into a new area.
ReplyDelete2- Suburbs are more a burden than a blessing that we should consider retrofitting suburbia because in the suburbs people drive twice the amount and cause us to rely on fuel.
3- According to Ms. Jones retrofitting is the more practical option when it comes to urban planning because there are many abandoned spaces that can be useful.
4- Under-performing asphalt means unused parking spaces that are on the land.
5- Some of the things that can be done with a “dead mall” is turn it into something else like a hospital, a school, a library or even a shelter for the people.
6- I think Jane Jacobs would disagree with Ms. Jones because she thinks that renewal did not meet with the standards of the people's needs.
7- My favorite retrofit example is the Mash peer commons because it really shows what urbanization is all about.
8- The retrofitting challenges for the future are building something new and making improvements to what was already built.
9- The challenge that Ms. Jones presents to the audience is to protest in order to live a suitable life.
10- Retrofitting requires a cultural shift as well as an urban planning shift because everything starts changing and it has to become more stabilized.
11- I think retrofitting is a viable idea in light of all I have learned about urban planning because there is still more to be created and it will make the environment a better place.
12- I think all the other TED talks that I have watched present similar ideas to the ones presented by Ms. Jones because they all try to make changes in the environment and try to make the environment a better, healthier and safer place to live in.
13- I can use this TED talk as I begin to build my “future city” this week because now I can over think the urbanization for my city and do things differently.
14- I think it is possible to create an urban lifestyle within a suburban environment because the ideas can get mixed all together and make something else.
1. Retro fitting suburbia is converting under performing existing landscapes into more sustainable places.
ReplyDelete2. According to Ms. Jones suburbs are actually more a burden than a blessing, because residents drive a lot more than those living in the city. This has increased our dependence on foreign oil. Another reason why is living in suburban areas has linked to a growing problem with obesity due to being less active. Heart disease and diabetes is another worrying health issues that can come from being less active than a person should be. The last reason is it is getting more expensive to live I the suburbs. The price for gas is higher in the suburbs. The cost on transportation is very high. For example, in Atlanta half of the households are spending 32% percent of their income on transportation.
3. According to Ms. Jone retrofitting is the more practical option when it comes to urban planning, because these projects are market driven. Most homes in the suburbia do not include children and these people want to live a urban lifestyle. That is what's in demand.
4. Under performing asphalt is parking lots that are under used.
5. You can turn a "dead mall" or "dead office park" into art space, nursing homes, universities, and office space. Another idea might be turning a "dead mall" or "dead office park" into a movie theatre.
6. I think the urban planning critics from the 60's would disagree with Ms. Jones ideas, because I think her idea to make suburbia more urban odd. In the past there has been more of a concentration on looking at the cons of urban living and trying to fix the issues that are caused by urbanization.
7. My favorite retrofits are the transformations from a "dead mall" to art space and a "dead mall' to a university. I think transforming a "dead mall" to a art space is very cool, because I think art is important and something like this bring the community together. I like the transformation from a "dead mall" to a university, because I think it's a amazing and dramatic change. It's cool to know that a university could have come from being retrofitted. That wasn't something I was aware of before this.
8. The retrofitting challenges for the future are planning retrofitting more systemically at the metropolitan scale. We should carefully consider whether we should be regreening or encouraging reinhabitation, etc. Another challenge is to make the architecture and aesthetic appeal better. The last challenge is for residents to start supporting the retro fits in suburbia and demanding more sustainable places.
9. Ms. Jones presents allowing suburbia to change and to welcome retrofitting to the audience.
10. Retro fitting represents these shifts, because most homes in suburbia no longer contain children which has led to a shift in the market and now people who live in the suburbs want a urban lifestyle. Since there is a demand for that underused space that is not sustainable is being retrofitted.
11. I think retrofitting is a viable idea as long as it's done with the environments well being in mind and doing it in a sustainable way that will have a positive impact on the environment.
12. I think the TED talk, New York's Mean Streets? Not So Mean and this TED talk present similar ideas, because both talks are about sustainability. Both of these talks are about using space in urban planning to the best of their ability and updating outdated spaces.
13. This TED talk is a reminder that I should attempt to make use of all the space in my future city and to make my city as sustainable as possible.
14. Yes, I think it is possible to create an urban lifestyle within a suburban environment. I don't think anywhere in the suburbs will ever be able to be compare to somewhere like, New York City or Chicago. However, I do believe we can continue to use retrofitting in suburban areas and create more places for entertainment while not destroying the environment.
1.Retro-fitting suburbia means to add new and working technology/ industries. to communities that are able to withstand them.
ReplyDelete2.Suburbs are actually more of burden than a blessing, because of the 3 reasons. One it cause's us to drive a lot more, leaving us to be dependent on foreign oil, therefore we hadn't been able to keep up technologically. Two, public health is affected by suburbs, because they cause people to adapt a certain or different lifestyle, which causes obesity. And three, it's hard to live in the suburbs, due to high gas prices.
3. Retro-fitting is the more practical option when it comes to urban planning, because while was studying she found 80 dead spaces. This shows that instead of creating new land, you can simply just add new foundation.
4. Under performing asphalt are neglected or rarely used areas, because they most likely will never be used.
5. Some things that can with a dead office or a dead mall, are: parking lots, art studious, nursing homes and universities.
6. Jane Jacobs would disagree with Ms. Jones' idea, because she thought in order to get things from the suburb, you have to first use public transportation
7. My favorite retrofit is the urban design, because you get a better understanding of how things are built.
8. The retro-fitting challenges of the future are whether or not to regreen it, and what changes will help and improve society
9. The challenge Ms. Jones presents to the audience is to protest from retrofitting , to living a regular life
10.Retro -fitting requires a cultural shift as well a urban shift, because everything eventually becomes better or worse, there fore the idea's people come up with, has to stabilize the world
11. Retro- fitting can be a very good idea for a society to live by, however you want to make sure you are getting something in return
12. A ted talk that relates to this is, a new vision for Detroit
13. I can use this talk for my city, because it gives insight on how to preserve abanded and old areas
14. I believe it's possible to create an urban life style within a urban environment, because if you put 2 different possibilities together, you'll get a good society.
Retro-fitting suburbia means that you would take the old crappy buildings and making it better than what it was
ReplyDelete2 - one way is the distance the suburbs is away from like the main city , would be alil to far for people to walk thats why people use thier car which creates pollution.
3 - the reason is because more places can become more sustainable and sturdy enough.
4 - under-performing asphalt according to ms. Jones means that not meeting the expectations of what needs to be finished
5 - some things that can be done to a dead mall is they can break it down and rebuild it to make some other building like a theathre , or a school or churches , etc.
6 - i think jane jacobs would disagree because the way ms. Jones thinks of the way things should be built or re-built , doesnt go with how ms. Jacobs thinks of it.
7 - some examples that are my favorite is the recreation of the dead areas because how an area looked before , can be changed to a different way.
8 - the retrofitting challenge for the future is where they are going to have to build up the places.
9 - the challenge Ms. Jones presents to the audience is maybe the sustainable ways of retro fitting.
10 - retrofitting requires a cultural shift as well as urban shift because it would make people really think of what to do with the buildings.
11 - i think retrofitting is a viable idea because you can revitalize buildings and clear up space for the people.
12 - other ted talks that present similar ideas is ms. Carters i believe because thy both talk about making more space for the people in a particular area.
13 - this can help because if we have a building or buildings that dont have any business in them, we can take them down and make another building from it.
14 - yes i think its possible because you are just going to need ways to get around with out polluting the air.
- D'ondre Pierre
1.) Retro fitting is when you take a big amount of space and break it down into smaller space , but keep the same amount of space. Its just that you have a certain amount, and you are just using that space into more usage. You are repairing a old building or area and creating a new one.
ReplyDelete2.)Suburbs is a burden, because the location of the suburbs was far away from cities. Cars, buses, trucks, etc., what ever has a engine that takes in fuel creates pollution. The more you use it, the more pollution is created.
3.) Retro fitting becomes more practical because it helps people use the things they need and the things they should get rid of, because they don't need those things. Its harmful to the environment.
4.) Ms. Jones underperforming asphalt is the abandon parking spaces.
5.) We can replace the "dead malls" with the things that we need. The things that we can use, such as homes, hospitals, etc.
6.) Yes, they agree, because they both agree that urbanization hasn't really been doing, what its supposed to. They both have the same goal. That goal is to change this, they want urbanization to do, what it is created and meant for.
7.) My favorite idea throughout this TED talk is that, the "dead malls" changing into things we actually need and can come in us. Such as homes, hospitals, etc.
8.)The challenges for the future is how we make and use our decisions. We should decrease the amount of energy that we use.
9.) The example she gives is to use less and have a good living.
10.) Retro fitting includes changing our way of living and get rid of things we don't need and develop the things we need to replace those places/ areas. It will cost a lot of money, but will make a better place for you and your usage.
11.) Retro fitting is a good idea. I think this because you are using the same amount of space but in a different way. You are using it to make smaller spaces in bigger space. It will have a great impact on the environment as well.
12.) The other TED talks are similar with this one because they are all trying to achieve one goal. That goal is to make urbanization work they correct way, the way it is supposed to be running. They are covering the same idea of overcrowded areas. All the TED talks want to create and see a change in urbanization.
13.) This TED talk can help us because it will help us and let us know to take the space up in a mature way. Use the space in a way that is useful to the environment. It will let us know to create enough space for the people and make sure the environment is in good conditions.
14.) Yes, it is possible because, we are using technology more and more. We are using as many things we can to change urbanization and make those things as much useful they can become as possible, in a friendly way so we do not affect the environment in a harmful way.
- Navdeep Singh
1-The definition of retro fitting suburbia is fixing up old messed up places, and taking a empty space and making it in to something.
ReplyDelete2 – in suburbs you use more energy then in urban places, In the suburbs people tend to drive more and make more air pollution, Obesity in the suburbs is very likely.
3 – Retrofitting is the more practical option when it comes to urban planning because you dont have to take out or mess with things that should be left alone like trees.
4 –Underperforming Asphalt is unused parking lots.
5 –Something’s that can be done with a ‘dead mall’ is making hospitals, parks, small businesses or housing.
6 – She would agree because this meets the needs of all and doesnt try to live up to any specific standards.
7 –My favorite retrofit is the reconfiguration of the dead malls because it gives opportunity to bring life to something dead with out to much reconstruction.
8 –Some retrofitting challenges for the future and what change will benefit the society.
9 –The challenge she presents to them is to protest retrofitting.
10 – Retrofitting requires a cultural shift because in order for an area to grow you need the input an assistance of others.
11 – I believe retrofitting is a viabIe idea, Retrofitting keeps all those in mind as it helps recreate an area to hold peoples interest while saving the environment by preventing mass expansion.
14 – I believe it is possible to create an urban lifestyle within a suburban environment
-Deanna Beckum
1 Retro fitting suburbia means taking old areas and building them up, using empty spaces to make things such as parking lots and mini malls for residents.
ReplyDelete2 The suburbs are actually more a burden because in suburbs you lose a lot of energy than in regular urban areas. Also the suburbs cause people to drive their cars double the average amount and caused us to only rely on foreign fuel. Another reason why suburban living can be compared with sedentary lifestyles that can cause obesity that ruins the health of American’s society.
3 Retrofitting becomes more practical because instead of us focusing on the things that do not matter we can finally focus on the things that do.
4 Under-performing asphalt is defined as abandoned parking spaces.
5 Some of the possibility that can be done with dead areas is that they can be rebuilt into places that can help the community for example make a school, hospital or a police station.
6 Jane Jacob the urban planning critics from the 60's would agree with Ms.jones idea because Jane believed that reusable plans were great she believed that if you reduce things it's helpful for you and the environment.
7 My favorite examples of retrofits are the remaking of dead areas because you wouldn’t what visitors coming in and seeing your area look like a dump.
8 The retrofitting challenges for the future would be finding new spaces and new areas to retrofit, because eventually these retrofitted areas will turn into main attractions to the city and tourists.
9 The challenge that Ms. Jones presents for the audience is that they need to protest and support the retrofitting of these suburban areas to help create sustainable living areas.
10 Retrofitting requires a cultural shift as well as an urban planning shift because they need to maintain stability in economical status of the city.
11 It has become a viable idea because with places changing in every generation things happen to change the people change as well as the city due to getting old , fast and trends appearing much more.
12 The ted talk that has the same interpretation of urbanization is the one that talks about overcrowding cities because the amount of people will always be either a good factor or a bad factor.
13 I can use this TED talk to build my “future city” by have better placing of my different areas and places I will build around it.
14 I do believe that it is possible because you can mix urban areas with suburban ideas because a little mix isn’t bad and it would be more creative to the people living there.

ReplyDeleteRetro Fitting ia when you take alot of
spaces making it up with alot of empty spaces
Suburbs is burdeb that use more energy than urban places
Retrofitting is urban planning when u take things you needs that is very harmful to the environment
Ms. Jones is saying the exceptions is not meeting the standards she needs
Things break down , rebuilt that can make alot of spaces such as dead office parks, art space, nursing and homes
I think jane Jacobs would disagree with Ms. Jones she thinks you need a standard that is needed
My favorite idea is to rebuilt a deal areas to be changed in a different way
The veto fitting challenge the society regarding if it good or not
Ms. Jones presented with sustainable, resteniable ways of retro fitting
Retro fitting requires the needs to change the areas with alot of money
Retro fitting is using spaces to create similar space in a bigger space have on impact
Ted talk s are similar be more willing to create alot of space, taking out the smaller space
Ted talks help me get all the spaces, it is continue to create with all the spaces for the people to be in a good conditions
Yes it is ti create a society to an all new urbaniazatiob lifestyle

1.) Retrofitting suburbs is the addition of new technology or features to older systems in a suburban area.
ReplyDelete2.) Suburbs are more a burden than a blessing because of greenhouse gases, increase of obesity, and affordability.
3.) Retrofitting is a more practical option when it comes to urban planning because you do not need more land than necessary and that land is renewable.
4.)under performing asphalt means the under usage of parking lots in or out of suburban area that depends on cars alot.
5.) you can probably make a dead mall into a nursing home, university, office space, etc.
7.) my favorite retrofit example is urban design because it shows things are and can be taken care of.
8.) the retrofitting challenge for the future is family areas to retrofit.
